What decides whether the default for collate is on or off? I tried changing it on my printer setup but every time I bring up Word it still defaults on On. Is there an option in Word tucked away somewhere?

Apparently, there is no stored setting for this option; as you found out it defaults to On. If you dislike this, check out this newsgroup post for a workaround - look for Bill Coan's reply.
