Annoying New Problem after Update... (6 + Q824145)

With the new Cummulative Security Update for November, MS has fixed a few vulnerabilities -- and broken one relatively unknown and under-documented feature in Internet Explorer. This is the IE "Scrollbar Popup Context Menu" (see image). So far, here are some of the unique things about the new changes that are occuring since the update:

My sentiments exactly. The choices are pretty much useless -- it takes a LOT more time to use this Context Menu than it does to simply use the Scrollbar itself! I hope MS decides to can the dumb thing -- especially since they broke it! Hopefully they will fix the excessive jumpiness to the scroll bar as well...

I bumped into it a good while back but of all the features to use, I can't think of one I'd use less--in addition to the mouse, I find it easy to use this Office keyboard scroll feature with my left hand. It's pretty resourceful of you to notice it at all and that it got buggy with the advent of Billy's Monthly Tuesday Jamboree.

I have installed the update a few hours ago; I don't see the first point you mentioned - clicking an empty part of the vertical scroll bar works as before (just one screen at a time). I agree that the right-click behavior of the scroll bar is annoying, in particular the fact that it's followed by a brief instance of the regular IE right-click menu. But I don't see it as a big problem: just don't righ-click the scroll bar.

The 'over' scrolling is driving me insane. Definitely caused by the latest IE security patch. It's happening on both my XP and old 98 machine. 90% of the time I scroll down a page by left clicking on part of the empty space below the scroll bar, and it's hard to change the habit of years. I suppose now I'll get training in using the mouse wheel.
While Microsoft are fixing this problem, there's a behaviour in Outlook Express that drives me insane too that I wish they'd think about changing. When selecting a new email message with the preview pane active, the scroll bar always goes back to the top even if you were half way through reading the message previously. There must be a way to get OE to remember the scroll bar position for each email.

I agree with Darren -- the behavior is quite annoying. As for " just don't righ-click the scroll bar" -- that is a joke, isn't it? So users that have gotten used to using this feature now have to just don't use it?? I have a better one -- just don't use the Mouse. Or, just don't use Microsoft products. Are those really solutions?

Re: Annoying New Problem after Update... (6 + Q824145)

Hello Rick,

Well, I didn't have problems with left-clicking the vertical scroll bar yesterday, after installing the patch, but I see what you mean now. It seems that the further away from the "thumb", the larger the scroll distance. If you click immediately above or below the thumb, you scroll by less than a screen; if you click near the up or down arrow, it seems to be up to about two screenfuls. This certainly will take getting used to.

I do use the right mouse button very often in many Windows applications, but I must admit that until you posted your findings yesterday, I had never even thought of right-clicking the vertical scroll bar. I now see that it does something in IE 6, Explorer, RegEdit, Excel 2002 and Access 2002, but not in Word 2002 or Outlook 2002. But the right-click menu is pretty useless, so I can live without it. That's all I meant to say really, not that people should give up using the right mouse button.

Sorry if I got your hair up, I didn't intend it that way.

Re: Annoying New Problem after Update... (6 + Q824145)

Have no worry, I was just being facetious. But the point remains, the solution should not be to not use it -- MS should fix the problem! Hopefully by bringing it into the light, the fix will be forthcoming some time soon...

On the computer I am using right now (pre-update) the Scrollbar Popup Context Menu works perfectly well. So, clearly it was broken by the recent update.

Agreed. Let's hope that BillG reads the newsgroups (and Woody's Lounge).

I kinda doubt that he even makes the decisions as to what features/bugs will be introduced or cleaned up. He's too busy figuring what company he'll eat today.

I don't understand why someone would mess with the scrollbar code. I've documented the weirdness in the attachment (not the menu weirdness, that probably requires video). Very annoying. Thank goodness it doesn't seem to affect Windows Explorer.

R2--

I'm trying to figure out if you noticed this because you saw people complaining on ng's or you have been using it? Of course anyone would agree that you shouldn't have to go around any feature because it breaks, and I can see using the page up and page down of rt. clicking the scrollbar if someone gets used to it, but the scroll up scroll down barely move.

Re: Annoying New Problem after Update... (6 + Q824145)

A bit of both. When I first saw the scrollbar jump too far I just thought it was some aberrancy caused by solar flares or something. But, then I saw it posted in a forum and multiple people were complaining about it. I would have never noticed the right-click Context Menu behavior in a thousand years -- because I never knew it existed in the first place.

I had not noticed the text selection (highlight) problem until the link you posted pointed it out. That one I would have noticed -- since I do like to cut and paste things off of web pages. The scroll wheel is actually the easiest way to scroll -- if you have a wheel mouse -- and that is NOT broken. However, not everyone has a wheel mouse.
