    Jet engine update (Access 2003)

When I started Access 2003 for the first time a dialogue advised me to update the Microsoft Jet with service pack 8. After some difficulty I found the update and applied it. The update uninstalled my separately partitioned copy of Office XP, uninstalled my PaintshopPro8, jumbled my file associations, removed my Access 2003 shortcuts, and blocked access to one of my hard drives through My Computer. All fixable but very annoying.

I haven't looked at Jet 4 SP8 yet, but I am surprised it did anything but update Jet. I don't know why it would uninstall anything, since OXP and VB6 also use Jet 4. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Re: Jet engine update (Access 2003)

I installed Jet 4 SP8 in October (for Access 2002, not 2003), and I haven't seen any adverse effects. Like Charlotte, I don't understand how a service pack for the Jet Engine could have such far-reaching consequences.

In general, it is wise to set a system restore point just before installing updates. This makes it easy to go back.
