    Copying bulleted styles (2002 SP-2)

How (if at all) can I copy bulleted styles from one document to another using the style organizer? Actually, how can I do it at all, style organizer or no? Currently the bullet formatting in the new document goes haywire. I would guess that the target document has a different set of list templates and the imported style is pointing to the wrong one, but I don't know a quick fix.

More generally, I had thought that List Styles were supposed to be more manageable in Word 2002. But I can't figure out how to improve over my practices in Word 2000. Any advice or URLs welcome.

Many thanks for your time and expertise! Erik

    Hi Erik:
I don't have Word 2002, & I hope someone with it can help find an answer for you. However, in Word 2000, the list template with attached styles can only be copied between documents if the styles connected to that list template don't already exist in the new document. In the case of heading styles, they generally are already present, and the list template gets ruined. You might try giving a unique name to the styles in the source document before copying, & see if that helps. Let us know how that works out in Word 2002.
    Cheers,

    Thanks, Phil.

Your solution works as described. But all the renaming and un-renaming (since I like the style names I have) is a bit tedious. Are we not meant to copy styles from one document to another? The question sounds flip, but I mean it seriously: I often come up with styles on the fly in a single document, and want to use them again without necessarily creating a template. Is my approach too idiosyncratic?

    Cheers,
    Erik

    Hi Erik:
Yes & No. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> How's that for being equivocal. Yes, you can copy styles between documents. However, there are two big issues to be aware of:
    A. Numbering is notoriously buggy. Mostly this is caused by the fact that the numbering isn't saved in the styles, but only attached to them. This also makes problems when copying between documents.
    B. Word has certain "rules" that it applies when you copy styles using copy & paste. They are different than copying using the Organizer.

The formatting rules that Word follows for pasted text are:
    1. Unformatted text takes on the formatting of the target paragraph style.
    2. Text with direct formatting keeps it

Thanks, Phil, for this orientation to style copying. In various documents I have given different formatting characteristics to styles with the same name. I can see I'll have to rethink my approach if I'm to copy easily where numbering is concerned. I appreciate the explanation.
    Cheers,
    Erik
