    Verifing Favorites

Does anyone know of a way (program, batch file, etc) the verify if all of the links in the favorites folders are still active. Specifically, I'd like something that would check all of the addresses and then report back any broken links (404). I thought of somehow copying all of the favorites into a web page and then having FrontPage or DreamWeaver check the links, but that seems like it would be very time consuming.

    TIA,
    Gary

    Re: Verifing Favorites

I picked up a handy little utility called Link Sweeper from zdnet a couple of years ago and am still using it. Unfortunately can't find it there anymore, but a quick search of the zdnet downloads turned up one called <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,000QD9,.html>X-link</A> which looks like it will do what you want. Haven't used it myself so can't advise but the following description is included on ZDNET:

    <img src=/w3timages/purpleline.gif width=33% height=2><img src=/w3timages/purpleline.gif width=33% height=2>

X-Link is a simple utility that searches for shortcuts whose targets are not valid. To put the process in motion, just select a drive and click on Search. The program quickly displays a comprehensive list of bad shortcut links. You can delete them individually, or clear them all in the blink of an eye. X-Link is very fast, easy to use, and -- best of all -- it's free. Reviewed on May 4 1998

It's an old review, but as I said, the utility I'm using is equally as old and still works fine despite upgrades of Windows and IE. Hope this helps <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Another utility in the ZDNET list is <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,001DHT,.html>Favorites Sweeper</A> described as follows:

    <img src=/w3timages/purpleline.gif width=33% height=2><img src=/w3timages/purpleline.gif width=33% height=2>

Favorites Sweeper is a simple tool that helps maintain the integrity of your Internet Explorer Favorites. It's a little limited in scope, but it's fast and very easy to use. Select Favorites folders to scan, and click your mouse to initiate the process. Favorites Sweeper validates each link and reports any problems found. It then allows you to complete the cleaning by removing selected links reported as invalid. The Favorites Sweeper free trial period lasts for 14 days.

Added this one after I realized the previous was not meant for IE favorites. Sorry about that. <img src=/S/bingo.gif border=0 alt=bingo width=15 height=22>
