    Versions (Word 2003)

Is there a way to edit the comments for a Version when you come back into the document? Has anyone found faults with using the Versions feature?
    Any help is appreciated!

I don't have Word 2003, so I don't know if the Versions feature has been improved, but it has a bad reputation, see the paragraph "Why Versions should be avoided" in this article on the Word MVP site.

Thanks for the feedback. I printed the link you sent me and I'll see if I can make heads or tails of what their custom document property is. I'm just looking for the BEST way to save new versions of a document w/out having to change the file name and save over the previous version. If anyone has any advice on this, please let me know!

    Thanks, Tammi

I'm not sure exactly how you like to work; I used to embed the date into the file name so I would have at least the previous day's version should anything terrible happen to the document. If you are interested in a more automated way to "back up" every time you save, check out the macro in this thread.

    Hi Tammi:
I know you said you didn't want to change the filename, but although it's not very trendy, it's easy to just press F12 when you want to save a version & add the next number to the filename, so that you end up with:
    FileName1.doc
    FileName2.doc
    FileName3.doc, etc.

When you press F12 & increment the number, all the files are kept together (assuming you save them in the same folder). You can use the compare or merge feature & you can keep track of the last time it was modified by using the SaveDate field.
