    Wrong location for Temporary files

My son had to replace the hard drive in his laptop and reinstall Win98SE. Now, temporary files are placed in the root directory of the C drive rather than in C:WindowsTemp. Is there a way to fix this?

    Go to Start/Run... & type

    sysedit

& press <enter>. You will see an AutoExec.bat file. Type in the following lines:

    Set temp=C:Windowstemp
    Set tmp=C:Windowstemp

    Close & save the changes.
    Cheers,

Re: Wrong location for Temporary files

    Thanks, Phil.
I should have mentioned in my first post that when my son opened e-mail attachments, copies of those attachments were showing up in the root directory, too. Do the modifications to the autoexec.bat file that you recommended put copies of attachments in the WindowsTemp folder?

    Regards,
    Peter

Mail programs usually use the folder designated as Temp folder to store attachments temporarily, so you're probably OK. If not, post back and tell us which mail program your son uses.
