    Spell Check a Form (Word 2002)

    I received a Word document with fields in it. It is a form I need to fill out. It is also protected with a password I don't know. So I use the tab key to go from field to field. When I'm done I would like to spell check the document before sending it back. The spell checker feature is grayed out. What are my options??

    Most of the solutions I've seen for spell-checking FormFields involve temporarily unprotecting the document. If you can't do that, I'm not sure there is a way from within Word. However, you can "de-protect" most protected forms by doing the following:

    1. <LI>Save As RTF
      <LI>Close the DOC file
      <LI>Open the RTF file (still protected, but the password is now blank)
    Obviously you can't send the form back in that condition, but it will let you run one of the spell-checking macros. I believe there is one at the Microsoft MVPs site (http://www.mvps.org/) in the Word section.

    This issue has been on this Word board recently. You cannot spell check fields. Since it's not your form (you don't have the password to unlock it), your best bet is to spell check your entries OUTSIDE the form, like on a "New" document., then copy/paste them into the fields.

    I pasted data for a field into a word document. The word receeived was in the sentence which is mot spelled correctly. I select the spell check and I get this message - The spelling and grammar check is complete. Text marked with "Do not check spelling or grammar" was skipped. What do you think??

    In addition to being a form, it sounds like the text is also marked for "no proofing." Go to Tools/ Language/ Set Language/ <uncheck> "Do not check spelling or grammar."

    It may be a part of the paragraph style, so modify the style to remove "no proofing."

    Re: Spell Check a Form (Word 2002)

    As Van points out, the problem is that the text is marked for non proofing. By default, text within a formfield is marked not to be checked (no proofing), regardless of the style. So you will have to change the "language" by selecting all the text & following the steps Van suggested (Tools/Languare/Set Language/UNcheck the box).

    Since you can't unprotect the form itself, all the text will be marked no proofing. A real PITA.

    Re: Spell Check a Form (Word 2002)

    Hi jsher2000

    I have search for some solution to be able to unprotect a form and found the answer you posted:

    1. Save As RTF

    2. Close the DOC file

    3. Open the RTF file (still protected, but the password is now blank)

    I tried to do this for my document, but it did not work. I used the space button, but may be another character or button should be used?

    I also tried to set up a macro to unprotect but it did not work either:

    Sub UnProtectDoc2()
    If ActiveDocument.ProtectionType = wdAllowOnlyFormFields Then
    ActiveDocument.Unprotect Password:=" " ' a space was inserted between the brackets
    End If
    End Sub

    Any chance to get the document unprotected?

    Thanks
    Bjorn

    The RTF route doesn't work for me either. Try the following:
    - Close the protected document.
    - Create a blank new document.
    - Use Insert | File... to insert the protected document into the new one.
    The result should be unprotected.

    Maybe Microsoft patched this little "hole"? I haven't tested recently. Hopefully Hans' solution will work for you.

    Thanks a lot Hans,

    Your solution worked excellent. I only had to make a new Header and Footer.

    Thanks
