strange pop-up message

    My friend wrote (she uses Hotmail) and asked me if I knew what might be causing her this problem which I have in quotes here - "I just keep having this message pop up as I am writing this..and other times also...The APP9241 RMP File is linked to missing export SHELL32DLL:SHget FolderpathA"

    I have done some searching in Symantec and MSKB articles but haven't come up with anything. This apparently just started. Any ideas? And what to do about it? She does have up to date virus protection loaded. for any advice!

    Re: strange pop-up message

    This error gets mentioned a lot in the newsgroups. I haven't found a definitive explanation or solution, but the general suggestion is that it may be spyware or adware (this is not the same as a virus). Let your friend run programs like AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy (with up-to-date data files), if she hasn't done so already. See <!post=Anti Adware / Spyware / Hijack,296439>Anti Adware / Spyware / Hijack<!/post> by KenK for tips.

    Have her try scanreg /restore from Dos, it's like a system restore.. From what I am reading it could be a corrupt registry entry, or maybe she could run SFC.{System File Checker}

    Hi Hans, I hadn't thought about it being spyware since it was referencing a missing .dll but this is definitely worth a try. Thanks!!

    Hi Cowboy!! We will also give this one a go as well and see what it turns up! I know it is driving her to distraction having it appearing with its message box popup right in the middle of her emails, etc. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Re: strange pop-up message

    Even though I don't know diddly about the error, the little thingie in the message about "...folderpathA..." causes me to wonder if it's some cryptic reference to something she did recently using the floppy drive. Could it be that some unseen application is looking for something in the A: drive? Maybe she installed a piece of software, or a driver, or sent someone a pix in an email, the source of which was the A: drive.... Wild guess (we used to call it a SWAG)

    Thanks Big Al for this suggestion also. If all goes according to plan, we are meeting after school on Monday to see if we can figure this out. Hopefully one of the three suggestions does the deed and solves the problem. If it does, I will post back and if it doesn't, I will post back for help!! and have a great week-end.

    Re: strange pop-up message

    This is a late post but I would like to put an ending to this thread - we used the Spybot and Ad-Aware programs and found the problem! She was happy and so was I. I don't remember the paticulars and for that I am sorry, but I do remember deleting a lot of "junk" and the message was history! for the help!
