    IE Home Page (V 6.0.2800)

This has probably already been covered before, but is it possible to "lock" the home page. I use Google, and sometimes it gets changed by sites with their own address. I want to prevent it being changed - can I do that?

    Thanks in advance

If you are familiar with regedit:

    LOCK DOWN BROWSER HOME PAGE

    1. Launch regedt32.
    2. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoft.
    3. Create the key Internet Explorer.
    4. Open the Internet Explorer key and create a key called Control
Panel, so you end up with
    _CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet ExplorerControl
Panel. This key might already exist.
    5. Add a REG_DWORD named HomePage and set its value to 1. This
change disables the home page controls.

Locking the Home Page is an option in SpyBot Search & Destroy - which has no charge for use.

FWIW... You CANNOT lock your Home Page in the registry.

What this does is LOCK YOURSELF out of accessing the Tools | Internet Options | Home Page setting. That way, sites CAN change your Home Page but YOU cannot change it back! Talk about shooting yourself in the foot...

I am not sure, but I think Spybot does the same thing -- locks the USER out of changing his own Home Page. Spybot MAY be more sophisticated -- and actually save and restore your previous Home Page setting -- but I don't think it is.

You likely need a tool like HomePage Guard -- which will protect your Home Page setting. Or, better still, don't let ActiveX or Scripting run in the Internet zone... If you must run ActiveX in the Internet zone, please install SpywareBlaster (and consider installing IE-SpyAds).

For the avoidance of further bold face caps, here is the option page on Spybot Search & Destroy. It is not as hard as I may have implied.

And these options are in the Immunize screen of Spybot S&D. Only "useful" against accidental change by yourself...

    R2--

Might Wilder Security's Browser Hijack Blaster or Definitive Solutions's BHO Demon efficiently protect against home page hijacking running in the background and using little resources? They aren't perfect though, because when ATT switched to Comcast-- Adaware 6.0 the free version--(little buying the other does at al)l-- foundthree comcast homepage malware keys in my registry and deleted them. My homepage had changed to comcast and I couldn't manually switch it until I used Adaware.

    Thanks, Unk. I take it you don't like those caps? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Yep! It looks like Spybot does a good job with this. Hans shows an image of what I THOUGHT (whoops!), thought you were talking about. So many people fall into the trap of locking themselves out of the Home Page Control Panel thinking that they are 'protecting' their Home Page. Spybot does it the correct way.

    I appreciate the education.
