    The page number will always be displayed in the status bar, and it will be kept up-to-date unless you're in Normal view *and* you have turned off background pagination (in the General tab of Tools | Options...)

    I'm betting that the document that you tested this on had the two conditions that Hans mentioned. When you inserted a page number field, you forced Word to repaginate the document. Once you do that, the page number will be in the status bar. HOWEVER, if you then add more pages and still are in normal view with background repagination turned off, the status bar will only report correctly on the pages that existed when you deleted the field. i.e. it will not keep track of new pages.
