Just once in a while there is born on my desktop a new icon. Its handle is "~", without the quotes. Its birthdate is the current date. It weighs in at 200K and doesn't bring along any program that will open it. Can anyone tell me what the little rascal is up to, and whether I can drop it into the ICON trash?

This is "scrap" and used to occur with Office 97 and Windows 9x - more often than not after a BSOD. It should be safe to delete. It's a bit surprising to see this on WinXP. Do you have any "legacy" applications installed?

If you want to see what you're dropping into the trash, rename it to "~.wab". It's a copy of your address book, and as John said, an OE update Oops!
It will probably reappear each time you send mail using the address book, but it's just annoying, not harmful.

Kudos to all for the quick replies. Without another thought I just beheaded the thing.
The machine is like five years old so there's likely a lot of legacy still in the old girl.
