    Compact/Repair Problem (Access97 on win95b)

I have attempted to Compact my backend database and when the progress bar got to the end, was presented with the following message:

Record(s) cannot be read, no read permission on R:Backend Data.mdb

so I used the jet compress utility and got the same result, so I then attempted to repair the database which said it completed successfully, so I then tried to compress it again but got the same old message in the same place.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on what to do now?

When the compact process encounters an error, a table MSysCompactError is created, at least if you have installed Jet 3.5 SP3, or if you use JetComp.exe (in that case, Compact is equivalent to Compact and Repair.) This table contains information about the problematic records. However, this table is deleted the next time you run a compact. You may be able to use MSysCompactError to determine where the corruption is located. See the Word document that came with JetComp.exe for details.

If that doesn't work, your best bet is to import all tables from the corrupted database into a blank new database. Perhaps one of the tables can't be imported, that will be the corrupt one; you will have to reconstruct it <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>. You may be able to copy most records from the corrupt table into the new table.

Of course, having a recent non-corrupt backup copy helps too.

Thanks Hans for the information, as to a non corrupted backup, I haven't tried to compact it for so long that i wouldn't have backups that far back.

I'll have to see about automating jet compress in order to maake it happen regularly
