    wlnstart32.exe (Win XP Pro)

    Hi,

When every we switch users on our Win XP PC it takes forever, with a message finally coming up saying unable to find wlnstart32.exe. I have disabled just about everything I can think of on startup but still get the message. Have done a google search for the file name - with no results. I don't know what this file is or what to do about the issue. Any suggestions?

I know that you mention WLNSTART.EXE, not WINSTART.EXE, but it might still be useful to see if this info about the W32.HLLW.Purol worm applies.

I had to look at this twice before I realised that the second letter was an "l" and not an "i". If it is indeed an "l", I can't add anything. If it is an "i", it could be a symptom of some form of worm. Have you tried running the various protective measures recommended in this Star post? HTH

There are a couple of hits on the Sophos antivirus website if you type in "winstart.exe" (yes, with the double quotes!) http://www.sophos.com/search/index.cgi?terms=, which you might like to check out?

    You never know...

    Re: wlnstart32.exe (Win XP Pro)

Hi Guys - thank you very much for your prompt responses. The name of the file definately has an L not an I in it. (See the attached screen shot). I have downloaded and run Spybot and Adaware but they didn't resolve it. Any other suggestions?

Have you checked the various Run keys in the Registry?
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type regedit and press Enter.
    - Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun in the treeview (the left hand pane)
    - Delete any value in the right hand side that refers to WLNSTART.
    - Locate HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun in the treeview (the left hand pane)
    - Delete any value in the right hand side that refers to WLNSTART.
You may have to repeat this for other users who have a profile under HKEY_USERS.

It's an extremely good question! I can find nothing on a Google internet search, on Google Groups, on November's TechNet DVD, or on six antivirus vendor's websites, for wlnstart, wlnstart.exe or "wlnstart.exe". I suspect you've looked too...!

The "advanced mode" of Spybot Search and Destroy has a feature which can display the startup items which Hans mentions. In the left-hand pane click on Tools then on System Startup. You should then find the offending WLNSTART.

I know I sometimes suffer from forgetfullness, but there's something deja vu'ish about this thread! I seem to remember the name WLNSTART coming up at some time here in The Lounge, but obviously without Search I can't find it. I did try using Control-F searching on 15 screensful of threads in the XP forum and also came up empty. I don't know.....but it IS driving me nutso.....

    It's all right for you, but I can't remember whether or not I suffer from forgetfulness... <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23>

I have to agree with you, Big Al, as I to remember something about this WLNSTART thing, but can not remember what it was.

    Re: wlnstart32.exe (Win XP Pro)

    Thanks for all your comments.

I installed and ran Spybot - it didn't find it, nor did Ad aware.

John - how do you access advanced mode of Spybot?

Hans - I couldn't find the file in either of the locations you suggested but did run a find through the registry and found the file. Because I found it using the search I can't see where it is located. The screen shot is attached. Now I am embarrassed - befor changing anything in the registry I want to back it up but can't remember for the life of me how to do it :-) Can someone please prompt my memory...

    Re: wlnstart32.exe (Win XP Pro)

    Karen

When I installed it I set up two shortcuts, Advanced and Easy. It's more than a day ago so I've forgotten how I did it, but the shortcuts have:

    Advanced mode "C:Program FilesSpybot - Search & DestroySpybotSD.exe"

    Easy mode "C:Program FilesSpybot - Search & DestroySpybotSD.exe" /easymode

You may be able to manipulate them accordingly? (I can't see any need for ever using "easy mode"!!

Anyway, from your screen shot you seem to have found the answer!

I presume you're using REGEDIT, so point to where you want to back up FROM, click on File then on Export, and give a file path and filename to where the backup will be written.

    Re: wlnstart32.exe (Win XP Pro)

John already gave you some tips.

This item is located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurren tVersionWinLogon. On my PC, the value is just Explorer.exe, so I'd say, go on and remove wlnstart32.exe.

Karen, for future reference, when you search for something in the registry, each time the search stops with a find, on the bottom of the screen should be the name of the registry key that you've stopped at. If it's not there and you can't see it in the left pane, click on VIEW on the command line and make sure there is a check next to STATUS BAR.

    Re: wlnstart32.exe (Win XP Pro)

Okay - now I am getting really frustrated. Went to regedit, backed up the registry. Did the same search I did yesterday and it came up with nothing!!! It was there yesterday, you saw the screen shot.

I am still getting the message on log-on. So next steps...

Found Spybot advanced and checked the system startup area. It shows only four things on start up. One of which is my anti virus software (Vet).

I am not sure what the others do, can I safely stop these on start up?
