Viewers for Office x97+ components (97 and up)

A friend of mine has been unfortunate enough to buy a new PC with Works (probably Works 7) on it.

Consequently, when she receives .DOC, .XLS and .PPT files, they won't open. (And that's having got round the "Security Feature" of Outlook Express which says "No, you can't have the file!".)

I've so far found only the
PowerPoint Viewer 97 for PowerPoint 97, 2000, and 2002 Users,
Excel 97/2000 Viewer: Spreadsheet Files - March 1999 - (but not an Excel 2002/XP viewer), and
Word 97/2000 Viewer (Windows 95/98/NT) - March 1999 - (but not a Word 2002/XP viewer).

Can anyone do better than this, and point me at viewers that would work for all these Office products (I think going as far back as Office 97 will do!)?

Thanks!

There is a new PowerPoint 2003 Viewer. It works for 97, 2000, 2002 and 2003.

The new features in Word 2002/2003 and Excel 2002/2003 compared to their 2000 predecessors are mostly in user interface; the 97/2000 viewers should work OK.

There is another viewer that is probable less useful for your friend, but I mention it here for completeness: the Snapshot viewer for Access 97 / 2000 / 2002. Access reports can be exported to snapshot (*.snp) format; with the snapshot viewer these can be viewed and printed.

Thanks, Hans - that's excellent.

She now says she has a copy of Office 97 and asks if it can be installed onto a Works-7-ridden XP Home PC.
I know I had a Lot of Fun while trying to keep Office 97 on a machine with Office XP thereon, so I personally would advise her against it.
What would be your take (or that of anyone else?) on the matter?

Thanks!

I have never used any of the Works versions, so frankly, I have no idea. I don't know if Works shares common files with Office; if so, the same rule would hold as for installing multiple Office versions on the same PC: install from oldest to newest; in this case: uninstall Works 7 (aka 2003), install Office 97, then reinstall Works 2003. Perhaps not worth the trouble.

Hans

It's a pity she didn't get WorksSuite rather than just Works - at least she'd have had a proper copy of Word 2002/XP as part of the WorksSuite package. Unfortunately, in the UK at least Dell seems to be bundling Works with their new computers, no doubt because it's so much cheaper than WorksSuite or Office.

Why does Microsoft make this all so complicated? Now I have to plough through the Works and Works Suite website...

I got the virtually free WordPerfect starter suite on my recently purchased Dell. No one knows, so I'm not yet the designated person to print and convert files.

I don't think that these viewers will be of much use.
Have her get a copy of Students and Teachers version of Office 2003 for $150 US. Uninstall Works totally and install Office. This will save a lot heart burn and problems.
On my new machine which came with Works Suite, I removed it upfront, and have Office XP running until my Office 2003 Pro gets here.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
