Run AutoOpen - DOC opened in IE (Word97/IE6/WinXP)

(Edited by jscher2000 on 18-Nov-03 08:59. More descriptive subject line added.)
I have a simple web page at http://www.users.on.net/grobinson/Temp/test.html
It has a simple hyperlink to a document "1.doc".

When 1.doc opens an AutoOpen macro runs displaying a dialog box.

With the default installation of WinXP Word will open embedded in IE6 and the macro will run (after a prompt)

However, when I go into Windows Explorer and modify the ADVANCED setting for extension DOC so that the document does NOT open in the same window, the macro stops running.

Can someone tell me how to make the macro still run, PLEASE?

For security reasons or whatever, Word does not run the usual Auto macros when opening a document from a link in a web page. Fellow lounger bjoeng (Bjorn) has much experience with this; maybe he will be able to contribute some workarounds for you.

It seems that Word's behaviour is INCONSISTENT. I have other documents with AutoOpen macros which DO run from the Browser. But this new one I created last nite behaves differently. Ain't it a pain like that. The AutoOpen DOES run when Word is embedded in IE, but won''t run when Word opens in a Word Window.

You've hit the nail on the head: when Word loads it in the browser, macros run; when the document opens in stand-alone Word, macros don't run. But is there a solution to the second one?! I don't remember that we found one.
