    Printing A3

    Is it possible to print a document set up as A4 onto A3 paper (other than simply change the Page Set up to A3!!)? The sort of thing you might do in a DTP package to get a 'full bleed'. Whenever I change the settings in the printer to A3, they get overridden.
    Thanks!

    For draft output you could select File -> Print -> Scale to paper size. Not sure if this will produce the quality you need

    Thanks but I cannot see this option, (I have Word 97). I can adjust scaling in my printer options (and set to A3), but both settings get overriden.

    I think your problem is that nothing much will happen unless you select an A3-capable printer - Word seems picky that way...

    Re: Printing A3

    My printer does print A3, and so can Word - to it - if you set it as an A3 document. My problem is if the document is set to A4, and you try to print onto A3 (by changing the settings in the printer), Word just ignores you and prints on A4! Maybe it's something for the DTP packages only?

    Have you tried changing the paper size in Word's Page SetUp ?
    That might do it.

    Re: Printing A3

    A thought:
    How about a macro to reset the page size to A3, print, then reset to A4?
    The following was recorded so most may be superfluous, but you may be able to use this to set the A4 'document' to the centre of the A3 sheet by adjusting margins etc.
    <pre>Sub A3()
    With ActiveDocument.PageSetup
    .LineNumbering.Active = False
    .Orientation = wdOrientPortrait
    .TopMargin = CentimetersToPoints(2)
    .BottomMargin = CentimetersToPoints(2)
    .LeftMargin = CentimetersToPoints(2)
    .RightMargin = CentimetersToPoints(2)
    .Gutter = CentimetersToPoints(0)
    .HeaderDistance = CentimetersToPoints(1.25)
    .FooterDistance = CentimetersToPoints(1.25)
    .PageWidth = CentimetersToPoints(29.7)
    .PageHeight = CentimetersToPoints(42)
    .FirstPageTray = wdPrinterDefaultBin
    .OtherPagesTray = wdPrinterDefaultBin
    .SectionStart = wdSectionNewPage
    .OddAndEvenPagesHeaderFooter = False
    .DifferentFirstPageHeaderFooter = False
    .VerticalAlignment = wdAlignVerticalTop
    .SuppressEndnotes = False
    .MirrorMargins = False
    .TwoPagesOnOne = False
    .GutterPos = wdGutterPosLeft
    End With
    End Sub</pre>

    Re: Printing A3

    Yes, that would be the easiest answer! But in this case, it'd mean changing font sizes, line spacing etc etc to make the page 'fit' the A3. It just seems a long way round.

    Re: Printing A3

    OK - I misunderstood what you wanted.
    You have something created on A4, but you want it scaled up to a size greater than A4 (and printed on A3) so that it can be trimmed back down to A4 with printing to the edge.
    Close?

    Re: Printing A3

    I don't know about Word 97, but Word 2000 has an option in the File-Print Dialog Box called scale to paper size, which will allow you to print a formatted page in one size scaled up to fit another page size.

    Re: Printing A3

    Yes that's about right and that would be useful.
    But in THIS particular case I'd like to print an A4 document to fit and print on A3 without changing paper size and therefore having to reformat the whole thing. In the end I enlarged it on a photocopier!
    But I have Word 97, not 2000. It seems odd that the printer will allow printing onto larger paper size and allow scaling, but Word will have none of it!

    Re: Printing A3

    Well supoose you put your page in a A4 sized text box and center it horizontally and vertically on an A3 page. Would that work ?

    Re: Printing A3

    Probably too late now, but if you have Acrobat, you can select the size of 'paper' to use and scale to fit. That may have given you different sizes, but the same source.

    Re: Printing A3

    My experience of exploiting the multiple options available on my printer (inc A3 paper) is that Andrew's advice is vital. You must tell Word 97 what you want using the four tabs within File|Page Setup. Word 97 ignores anything you set on the printer via the control panel.

    You may also wish to check what's set in Tools|Options|Print

    Stuck (but not at the moment)
