    Doc doesn't open right/Word 2000 (SP 3)

I have acquired a problem with my Word Documents, and seriously need some advice. I'm running Windows 2000 Pro/SP 3. I messed up a little while ago, and tried to open a genealogy file that I created in W98SE. I got a BSOD, and after Windows was back up, the problem appeared. Now, when I double click on any .doc, I get at least 2 error dialog boxes, and on some documents as many as 4. Error #1: "The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions: *Check file permissions for the document or drive. *Use the file open dialog box to open the file." Error #2: "The name or path is not valid. Try one or more of the following. *Check the path to make sure it is typed correctly. *On the file menu, click open. Search for the file using this dialog box. (path)." Error #3 and #4: Same wording as #2, except with different paths at the end in parentheses.

I can open Word, and open the file by using the file/open command; I can open it by right clicking on the doc, and use the open with command. Also, after I click OK on all the error boxes, the file opens normally. The only problem is with double clicking the doc. These files are all in the original location(s), none are shortcuts. This happens in both admin and user profiles. Speaking of profiles, when I checked them, they both showed that they were changed today. I've checked the properties of several docs, and the path is correct on all of them. I don't use the NTFS file system. When I open the properties/sharing box, and click the "permissions" tab for the doc in admin capacity, I get an error box saying "This has been shared for administrative purposes. The permissions cannot be set." Sharing is enabled. This is a stand alone machine. Can anyone help??

    Thanks in advance.
    Mike.

    Re: Doc doesn't open right/Word 2000 (SP 3)

    Hi Mike:
I'm not familiar with Windows 2000, so these instructions may be slightly different.

First, reboot & delete your temp files. See Step 1 of <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.

Secondly, go to Start/Settings/Folder Options and click the "File Types" tab. Scroll down to "Microsoft Word Document" in the list, and double-click it to open the "Edit File Type" box. Under "Actions", double-click "Open". Make sure the "FileOpen" part of the DDE message looks like this:

    [FileOpen("%1")]

The quote marks are crucial. When you double-click a file to open it from Explorer, the %1 is replaced with the file name. If you leave out the quote marks, any long file name that contains spaces will then look to Word like a list of different files instead of one file.

You can also use the Repair feature on the Help menu in Word. This should re-register the extension properly. You will need the Office CD if the installation files are not on your hard drive.
    Hope this helps,

    Howdy Phil. A regular genius, you are <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15> I had forgotten about the repair feature, but it worked beautifully <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23> MANY thanks!
