Table of Contents with 2 columns (Word XP)

I have a very long table of contents. Is it possible to have 2 columns TOC on the page, to make better use of all the empty space on the word page. and to have it say page 1 page 2 vs just 1 or 2???
    example
    1. abc .....1 3. def......3
    2. bce........2 4. fgh.......4

You can use Word's columns feature and see what happens. It's possible that the TOC entries themselves will wrap in a way that you don't like, but you certainly can try. Select the TOC, then choose Format>Columns and experiment.

I don't follow your second question:

    > and to have it say page 1 page 2 vs just 1 or 2???

You want to change the page numbering of the pages themselves, or in the TOC?

Second question, No not renumber the pages but have it formatted in the TOC so it says "............page 1" vs just ".........1"
    Thanks

I looked at all the switches (in Word 2000) & couldn't see a way to do it. Maybe something will come to me tomorrow. Sorry.

I don't see any way of doing this in Word 2002. Trawling through the Microsoft newsgroups didn't turn up a solution either.
