All patches for standalone system ? (Windows XP-SP1)

    Hi,

My computer is not connected to a network or to a workgroup and never had file sharing enabled; I don't plan to change this status for the next years. Do I need to install the botched (dixit Woody) patch Q824145 ? (I also read about it in this thread started by R2.)

Come to speak of it, do I really need to install all the patches for networks and/or for servers although they don't really apply to my system, regardless of what surprises and little annoyances I may encounter ? If so, why ?

I know the official view is to install all the updates and patches and this has been discussed and rehashed in various fora, nevertheless it would be very helpful to read some opinions.

    Thank you in advance,
    Oana

If you are willing to take the time to read the nitty gritty details in the security bulletins, you can decide for yourself which security updates and patches you want to install. Many of them are not relevant to or necessary for a PC that is not on a network. Updates that have to do with internet security are trickier; in many cases having a firewall is sufficient, but how to decide that?

After a problematic update in April or March of this year, I read all the bulletins for a while, and only installed those that seemed relevant to my setup. But I gave up, it was just too much work to wade through all the technospeak, and went back to installing all patches. Q824145 has some annoying (and unnecessary) side effects, but I can live with them. And, as Woody says in Woody's Windows Watch Vol 6 No 27:
<hr>What to do? Install the bloody things and rail against the Windows Patching Gods
    ...
But whatever you do, run Windows Update (Start | All Programs | Windows Update) and get patched. Paul Roberts at IDG News reports that working "exploit" code is now circulating on the Web that takes advantage of the hole patched by MS03-049. Like it or not, you need to get patched.<hr>

Thanks for the quick reply. It's WWW Vol 6 No 27 and specifically the paragraph you quoted that made me ask if I should change my tactics. Until now, each time a new patch or update was announced, I took the time to read the nitty-gritty and decided if it was relevant or important to my configuration, but I'm not sure if, like it or not, I need to get patched and have to rail, post factum,
    <hr>against the Windows Patching Gods<hr>
Do you have an idea what can/will happen if I don't ?

In this specific case, the security bulletin MS 03-49 states explicitly that blocking a number of ports protects you against the problem, and that a firewall will do that (unless you fiddeled with its settings), so if you have a firewall, you don't need to install this one (Q828035).

Woody points out that Windows XP SP2 (to be released early in 2004) will make updates fully automatic. If you install it, you won't have a choice any more.

That being the case, and given Microsoft's track record of less than secure OSs' and botched patches, why would anyone install SP2 ??? <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15>

    What's the problem, Doc?

Microsoft will have to have sorted out all these update problems by then! They would, again, be "<font color=blue>betting the company</font color=blue>".

Can you imagine the global impact if Microsoft were to release an erroneous patch, compulsorily applied, which causes major problems to most of the world's PC? Would the programmers be looking for new jobs? Would Bill?

    John, John, John..........

They were supposed to have ALL the bugs ironed out with XP, remember ??? Then they started issuing patches, some of which can't be removed, that sometimes, made some systems, worse that before they were patched. And I haven't read about any major turnover in Redmond lately. Their "new" jobs are to fix the problems they created doing their "old" jobs !!! They don't have to look for another job. Their current jobs are self-perpetuating !!! And Bill doesn't need a job !!! He can "bet the company", lose, and still walk away a rich man, albeit, with a less powerful company.

And we don't have to imagine the global impact of an erroneous patch, we have the model of the "erroneous OS", compulsorily applied (to all new PCs) that begat the birth of Blaster and SoBig to cause major problems to many, if not most, of the world's PCs.

Well, we'll cross that XP2 when we come to it or when it comes to us. I think I'll go on with the nitty-gritty provided Bill and his choir-boys don't start throwing at us patches, patched patches and more patches on a weekly basis. My ports are ironclad and I never fiddle with firewalls.

You have something like a little less than a year to cross the bridge in all probability although I would never underestimate the ability of M$ to change its mind from hour to hour because they have and they do including the decisions on the final first X-Box less than 24 hours before it began its final build--Longhorn and SP2 have been pushed back several times.
