    XP, USB & SP1 (XP Pro SP1)

Lost use of all USB ports including USB mouse after installing SP1. Dell sent a new computer saying it is a mother board problem. After receiving new computer I again installed SP1 and guess what, no USB. So now I have 2 Dimension 8300 computers sitting on floor.
Should I phone Dell again? (hours on phone).
    Any idea's?

    Thanks

A new 8300 should be shipped with SP1 pre-installed. Why would you install SP1 on a new system ??? Why didn't Dell ask you that question ??? Can you uninstall SP1 from either machine ???

You would think that the machine would come with SP1 installed. Nope. Neither time. I haven't yet tried to uninstall. But, if I do then what? Shouldn't I have SP1 on the machine?

Re: XP, USB & SP1 (XP Pro SP1)

I would call Dell and ask for 2 RMA numbers and send them back their machines. I bought an 8250 over 10 months ago and that came with SP1 as part of the OS installation. I know this is the case, because the HD failed after 3 months and I had to reinstall everything from scratch when they delivered and installed the new HD under the warranty. When I installed XP pro, SP1 went in right along with it.

Your invoice should have the OS installation listed. If it doesn't include SP1 I'd call Dell and find out why................. asking for the Return Merchandise Authorization number should motivate them to get you an answer and perhaps an OS installation with SP1 built-in.

Dell ships XP Pro SP1 on a separate CD, I believe. Did you use that CD or something from Windows Update? If it was Windows Update, and assuming not too much data loss would result, perhaps you can try to run some kind of repair from the CD. Dell often uses odd drivers that require patches or custom installs.

the computers did not come with SP1 installed or on a cd. so I used the windows update site. I guess I'll have to call Dell when I get home. I've heard that Dell (or gateway etc.) need proprietary drivers sometimes but I thought SP1 would have all the bugs out by now. Like I said earlier, when Dell said the mother board was gone on the first machine, I thought they must know what their doing, but now a second machine and same problem. It must be something other than the mother board.

    thanks all for your help.

There have been some problems with XP1 and USB hubs. Make sure that in Device Manager that for all USB hubs that under Power Management the 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' is unchecked.

Also saw this in an XP newsgroup. Can't vouch for its efeectiveness.

I would 1: get the ports back working normal.
2: Remove usb in the divice manager.
3: Now boot to your Bios, make sure to catch it the first time
or xp will put the drivers back in.

Make sure before going to 4: that the usb driver are
    infact uninstalled.

4: Once in the bios disable all usb devices.
5: Reboot the system should xp will not see the USB now that
    they are disabled in bios
    6: Install service pak
7: Upon good install boot into bios again and reenable the usb
    device, save and reboot.
8: The new xp will see the new hardware and should install them
    correct.

    Maybe this will help.

Re: XP, USB & SP1 (XP Pro SP1)

Unless I've been misinformed, all Dells ship with a copy of the OS on a seperate CD from the CDs that are used to install the drivers and the CDs that are for the OEM installed utilities and programs. You should have a CD inside the shrink-wrap for the OS and a couple Dell drivers CDs. Take a close look at the CDs you got with the system. There is no way that you should have to download SP1 for a machine that new from a company as large as Dell. SP1 is practically part of the OS at this point. We've been discussing the ramifications of SP2 here in the lounge for awhile now, but let's not go there.

Re: XP, USB & SP1 (XP Pro SP1)

Sorry guy's, you're all correct. XP home edition c/w SP1a is installed on the machines. And the CD is in the box. I took a close look like DocWatson said and sure enough it say's "Xp Home SP1a". The machine's came with XP Home SP1a included. I have XP Pro of my own so I didn't upgrade. When the machine's arrived I upgraded to XP Pro then went online to the Windows Update Site. Since my XP Pro doesn't include SP1, the Update Site said to download and install SP1. I did and that's when I lost USB on the machines. Damn.

Maybe when I get home tonight I'll try what joeperez has come up with.

I was able to go back to a previous state, before SP1 and I now have my USB back but shouldn't I have SP1. It seems to me that most of the updates on the Update Site are important to have installed. Maybe I've messed up by putting Pro on the machine's

Anyway thanks alot for all your help.

Re: XP, USB & SP1 (XP Pro SP1)

I'm just guessin' now, but I would think that SP1 once installed with XP Home would still be installed after an upgrade to XP Pro, even if Pro itself doesn't have SP1.

The question that comes to mind here is is that upgrade to XP Pro on a previously activated copy of XP Pro ?? That may be part of the issue if it has been activated on another system.

    Fixed!!! <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

Actually quite easy. Just a matter of re installing the original "USB Host Drivers" from the "Driver Disc" that came with the machine. What I'd like to know is why Dell didn't know that. Like I posted before, they decided that the mother board was toast and sent another new computer. Crazy. Anyway, here's the site I found the instructions on " http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;329632 " .

Dell actually told me NOT to use the Windows Update Site. Said there was no reason to, because the machine comes ready to use.

Thanks again to all that posted. You got me on the right path. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

With Technical Support you are always at the mercy of whichever chap/ms-chap you get landed with. Maybe they've been doing it for years, maybe they got hired yesterday.

Dell has it own little update program that appears on the system tray every so often with messages from Austin, TX. I close it every time I see it, but perhaps they want us to use that for our Windows updates instead of Microsoft's site??
