hard disk fail

When starting up my computer this morning I received the following message "Danger-Danger Will Robinson" will not really but that is how it felt----"Primary master hard disk fail".
I have received this a couple times before, I hit the reboot button (I know not always the smartest thing) it booted just fine.
This morning playing around a little I got it to boot just fine. So, to my question what does this mean, and can I run a check up some how? I am doing a virus scan as I am typing this. It is a Milwaukee PC computer (local company) with Win 98 SE, 256 RAM, Celeron processor. Any suggestions as to checkups, fixes or comments would be greatly appreciated. This is an area that I am truly in the dark. Stevo

Stevo,
1.Running the virus check is a good first check.
2.Boot to your BIOS setup screen and usually in the Advanced BIOS Features tab, look for a "HD S.M.A.R.T. Capability" line. disable it and save the settings. This is for Award BIOS, other types may have a different place, but look for something similar.
3.From a DOS screen, run "chkdsk /f" on your boot drive C:.
4.Might also be a good idea to get AdAware & Spybot S&D progs and run them. ( good to do anyway ) Let me know if you don't have them. I'll give you links if needed.

If SMART is turned on first backup all of your data and next go buy a hard drive.

Kent,

I don't think SMART is that "smart" after all. A lot of articles on how it gives you a false "Prophet of Doom" reading, when all it takes is a thorough chkdsk and surface scan to make it quiet down. Sells a lot of new HD's though.

My only experience was with a PC I sold to a neighbor, he started the receiving the error on day one, on day three the HDD died and could not be recovered.

Never take a chance and lose all your Data. Be prepared and keep a backup. If it says the Hard Drive is Bad, you best pay attention just in case it is right. Better to be safe then sorry. BACKUP YOUR DATA!!!

Re: hard disk fail

You could also try Steve Gibson's Spinrite to see if it can "recover" and/or repair the hard drive. The drive manufacturer probably also has some diagnostic software for that will tell you for pretty sure whether the drive passes all or some of its tests. But, everyone is right - make a backup, quickly! (Assuming you can!)

... but SpinRite doesn't work on NTFS (which may be relevant?).

Re: hard disk fail

But he said he was running Win98SE. No NTFS with SE.

Re: hard disk fail

Thanks for all the help!
I did a virus scan, & spy scan ( I regularly use both Spywareinfo online scan and Lavasoft) both were cool.
Then I checked and pushed the ribbons in the machine to be sure they were seated.
Went into the BIOS but could not find the HD SMART, but For Now everything is working fine.
Tonight I will be doing a scan disk and defrag.
Oh ya--I also backed up the goodies, OE etc.
Thanks, Stevo
