    New Install

I am re-installing my W2K, and other software...

WinZip is the default zip handler.

I am trying to install a prog called CapsOut, which is part of a zip file... if I unzip the files to a temp folder and then run setup.exe, I get the following error:

    Cannot find FownloadSetup ShortcutsCapsOutTempSETUP.EXE
Windows needs this file to run FownloadSetup ShortcutsCapsOutTempSETUP.EXE.

But the folder, and the files... are there.

What gives here? How do I fix this?

Have you tried running from the Checkout button in WinZip. (It's the 7th button along on a default setting - starting from the left.) Or are you already doing that?

I take it that the path it is quoting is exactly the same path as you are using. Try going to Start|Run, entering the specified path and choosing OK.,

    Re: New Install

I don't know if this is indicative of the fact that you've gotten your hands on a snake or what! I did a Google on the software title and got lots of hits. I was going to download a copy to see what happens to me. EVERY download site I tried returned a similarly worded error 550 saying that the path is bad or doesn't exist. Maybe it's just a coincidence - the software could be old and no longer available (I see dates that look like it's been around since 1998). You might have to use a binary editor and look in the innards of that SETUP.EXE to see if you can find the path string it's looking for.

    Big Al:

I again got this error with another file... so it's got to be my install, or...... my disk?

    Re: New Install

Are you using the same folder "FownloadSetup ShortcutsCapsOutTemp" for this new program?

Some of the older progarms do not like a "Long" path to the setup program. Try copying the setup to a short folder such as "Junk" at the root of a drive and give that a spin. Also make that ALL files that are in the Zipped file are in the same folder.

Remember that older programs were written when "8+3" was the requirement.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Possibly the app doesn't 'like' the fact that there is a "Temp" sub-folder in the path. It probably needs to make use of a temp folder during the install and gets confused. Other than that, I think Dave's suggestion of running it at the root should 'sort it'.

Look at it this way: you've done almost all the preparatory work already! <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>
