    PC not booting

At the plant we have a Dell that is a real booger. In the beginning if it was improperly shutdown it would not power up. The Power light on the front of the case would come on but that was all. No anytime it is shut down you must remove the power connector from the power supply to the motherboard to properly boot the one time. I have swapped out the power supply and front power/reset switch. I have turned off all WOL/WOM functions in the BIOS and removed the WOL cable from the NIC, I have removed every piece of hardware and booted still the same results, I have even replaced the RAM all to no avail.
When power is applied to the power supply the system tries to come on (without pushing any buttons) and the Power light is on the front of the case but the HDD light never comes on. The only two parts I have not R/R and or tested are the CPU and motherboard, of course the unit went out of warranty last February.

    Kent,
Have you tried reseating all PCI cards?

Sounds like a Motherboard problem to me. Have you checked all your Jumper Wire Connections. Such as Power, Reset, HD Led and so forth? What kind of Motherboard is it? Do you know how to use a Jumper to turn the Power on and Off?

Have you (or can you) check to see if something is getting shorted out? Here's my similar story from only a month ago! I had the cover off a Celeron 400 machine to replace a hard drive. This particular case has one of the hard drive mountings right inside the cover wall, in a VERTICAL position. After the replacement and reboot to finish all the tweaking and software adjustments necessary, everything was fine until I put the metal cover back on. When I put the power cord back into the PS, the <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> machine powered ON, seemingly "by itself." To make a long story short, I discovered by accident (looking down on the machine from above) that I had that hard drive rack slightly misaligned where the drive itself was touching the cover and apparently shorting out the WHOLE system. As soon as I corrected the alignment, the problem stopped. Luckily, I didn't blow anything!

Yes, I removed all PCI cards and reinstalled one at a time to see if any of them were the problem.

    Hey Cowboy!
There is only a BIOS Password jumper on the motherboard and I double checked its location/setting. As for the brand I don't know. The computer is a Dell and they make things "funky" like the power connection and the front switch/light connection. As for jumpering the Power, yes on a "normal motherboard I do know how to, on this one I will need to find the power and reset pins but that is an excellent idea that I had not thought of. I will give it a try this morning.
BTW the Giga-byte motherboard that I posted about a month or so ago, it was RAM. Even though I used many different sticks and two brands that were "for" the motherboard, I took a leap and ordered another stick from Crucial, it was a different part number than the stick I recieved back in March. Anyway it seems to be working. I am using the RAM in other machines just fine, go figure! I would fuss at Kalhon and Crucial for sending me incorrect RAM but I have already been fight for 6 weeks about a mischarge on my credit card by Kalhon and I have not contacted Crucial.

BigAl, I had not even considered this, when I am checking the power jumper this morning I will check and see if the HDD or other metal bracket is touching the case somewhere. I do know that it does occur when I have the side of the case off, but the opposite side and base might be an issue.
