Updates fail to install (XP Home SP1)

Most attempted Windows XP SP1 and IE6 updates since Sept.
15 have failed, (Security Update 824145 installed
successfully 5 times). No error messages. They download
just as they should. The install process looks like it's
working just as it should. Cryptographic Services is running,
(set on auto but manually started). I get a message at the end of
the procedure that all updates failed. I've tried the fixes
on Windows XP from A-Z and updatexp.com/crypto... re-
registering the suggested dll files without success.
My installation of Windows appears to be working fine with
this exception. I've posted this problem in M$ Community
Newsgroups a number of times but the MVPs didn't notice.

I suppose you have removed any bad installations of Security Updates from the Register using regedit, and then tried to reinstall?

    Billn--

CBD's going after any incompletely installed hotfixes in the registry will get conflicting installs out of the way so you can have a clean shot at getting these in. Are you using Win Update or the Security Site? If you haven't used the MS Security site, give it a try--and if you have, maybe the incomplete installs are in the way stopping them from getting in. I'm not familiar with Cryptographic Services--I googled it, but not sure if what I'm finding is what you mean or where it fits into this problem.

    Security Bulletins

I suggest you get your update notifications via

    Microsoft Security Bulletin Update

Re: Updates fail to install (XP Home SP1)

There is no reference in the registry to the failed updates, 823182,
    824141, 825119, 828026, 828035. There is no reference to 824145
which installed successfully . There is no reference to these in
"Install Remove Programs" or in Windows uninstall files either.
RPCSS calls CRYPTSVC which must be running to install some patches.

Re: Updates fail to install (XP Home SP1)

Have you tried to download the failing updates from the Windows Update Catalog (available via a link from the Windows Update website)? If not, try downloading the updates from there and installing them manually and see what happens.

For what it's worth, Windows Update sucks. It's fundamentally broken.
