Add one to previous record (2000)

I am trying to set up a field that will automatically add one to the previous record or allow you to enter a new number which will then increase by one for the next field. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Could you give a little more detail?

I am setting up a inventory application for a dry cleaner. I have a table to keep track of the receipts he issues which are consecutively numbered. When he uses up one pad the next may not be in numerical order from the previous that's why I must me able to change the number.

Re: Add one to previous record (2000)

I would set-up the DefaultValue of the ReceiptNo to be something like this (I'm guessing at field & table names):
    =nz(DMax("receiptNo","tblReceipts"),0) + 1

This will add 1 to the previous Max receipt #. User can always enter another number. Of course, this assumes they will always use higher numbers, and not try to use lower numbers. Then it gets much more complicated.
