    Strange Windows Components Window (Windows XP Pro SP1)

    Have attached a capture of my Windows Components Window under the Add/Remove Programs area. I do not understand why these first two components are not described or labeled. Has anyone had this problem? Should I be that concerned about this? If so, what actions would you recommentd?

    Thanks.

    Gary,

    Does clicking on the "details" button give you any more of a clue? My guess is, this is from a corrupt installation or an abandoned install. Notice, one is zero in size, I would set a system restore point and delete them one at a time, or use a program like AddRemove Pro to get rid of the listing if plain old addremove can't remove them. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    Thanks but I do not see an option in Add/Remove Pro to remove these entries. I do not know what these entries are called nor can I uninstall thme manually because when I try to remove check from checkboxm I get no response from touchpad.

    Anyway, these are under Windows Components not programs but if anyone ellse can add anything I would appreciate it.

    Thanks.

    Gary,
    Components in Windows components can be removed by UNCHECKING the associated box next to the name & OK'ing out.
    When you say there is no response to unchecking them, Are they "greyed out" and unaccessible?
    DId you click the details box to see if there is more info about these items?
    Set a system restore point and delete them.

    BTW, AddRemove Pro is a separate program and is not part of Windows XP. If you want to try it , I'll post a link so you can download it. But it is for items or programs, not for system/Windows components.

    Re: Strange Windows Components Window (Windows XP Pro SP1)

    On the first entry, it shows details with several entries but 0 MB beside each one and no description at all. I was able to uncheck these boxes but it still shows that I have something isntalled there although no sub comonents are ckecked. No matter what I do I cannot remove the check from the first entry as you see it in the picture.

    Also, the second entry in picture is where the Deatails button is greayed out and I can do nothing to remove the checkbox. Yes, I have been using Windows for a long time so I am familiar with the Add/Remove module.

    Thanks for helping. Will probably leave well enough alone for now.

    Gary--

    I believe along the lines with Bob that this is probably a form of an incomplete install--a type of orphaned entry in your Windows Components. You can uninstall Windows Components in the registry, and this might also be a place where you can get a look at what this is--maybe--the look may not shed light.

    Some Windows components intentionally have no descriptions in its INF files. For example, if you unhide TabletPC component by deleting HIDE entry in SYSOC.INF file, you will see the empty string in Add/Remove Windows Components dialog because TABLETPC.INF file contains entries like this:

    [Optional Components]
    TabletPC

    [ tabletPC]
    OptionDesc = ""
    Tip = ""

    As you see, strings were left empty intentionally. I believe, in your computer some components as TabletPC, Freestyle or netfx were unhided. Check your SYSOC.INF file.
