One PC won't connect to Internet (XP Prof)

I recently bought a used computer from a computer store. It came preloaded with XP Pro. Normally I should be able to just turn it on and using DHCP, I'd be connected to the internet. That didn't happen. I set up the login for the Workgroup bec. I knew I'd need that next. It sees that it's connected to the Workgroup, but that's as far as it goes with that too.

The LAN connection status shows that bytes are being sent, but none rec'd. It has the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 but the IP as 169.254.94.6. The Type is Automatic Private Address. Connection shows connected at 100.0 mpbs. If I try to put in a manual IP and gateway it still doesn't connect to the internet. I then disabled the connection and re-enabled it and it had zero's as the IP address, etc. So I told it to Repair. Then it said that the repair failed renewing the IP address.

Ahhh, what next? does it have a bad NIC? It is the kind built into the board right next to the plug in for the mouse and keyboard. It shows connected though. On the back of the connection, where there would normally be connection and activity lights for the LAN, the is a light that blinks occasionally.

I hooked up my laptop directly to that cable and it connected right away to the LAN with a good connection; so the line is good.

    What next?

If your LAN connection is good, then so is the Ethernet port. Probably, anyway. Try the following in order and see if you can get a resolution.

If you are using DHCP, is the DHCP service[/b] started in the Services applet?

Is the DNS service started?

Do you have a firewall, router, or other network equipment in the path? If yes, what?

Can you access the Internet using any other applications?

Can you ping the loopback adapter (127.0.0.1)?

What error(s) do you receive when trying to connect to the Internet?[/list]I suspect it's a Windows configuration problem of some kind, but what is significant here is that you cannot renew your DHCP address. Usually that happens because the service is not running.

Thanks for your reply. Just moments ago as I was looking through the router configuration (that assigns the DHCP), I did a refresh on the settings and looked to see in the table which computers it saw. Just then it showed that that computer was connected! I went back over to that computer and it was now connected to the internet, even though I tried for over an hour to get it to connect.

There were no firewalls installed, no programs at all could access the net or ping anywhere. But it showed a full 100 connection via the NIC.

So, I'm not really sure what was going on since that IP saw the laptop from that same line.

Anyway, all is working now, just puzzled as to why it hung in the router.

Perhaps the router's firmware needs an update? Linksys routers used to do this regularly until the firmware version was updated. Also, at one point, I managed a network that had a switch that had a memory of its own - if an IP address on the network changed, you could wait about 24 hours for the change to take effect on that segment, or take down the segment and bring it back up by rebooting the switch.

You may never know the answer, but as long as it works, that's the important thing!

Re: One PC won't connect to Internet (XP Prof)

Most likely the router's firmware does need to be updated. I have had it for many years. I have been hesitant to upgrade since "if it ain't broke...". But maybe it is...

I am planning on going partially wireless soon anyway and that brings up another question (maybe I need to post elsewhere or maybe you can assist). Will I want to plug the existing router into the wireless router (since I'll need a wired LAN and wireless LAN) or the wireless router into the existing router? It's a Linksys 4 port.

Yes, if you need wired and wireless both. You will need to set up a static route between them in each router's configuration - so be aware of that. It's not hard at all, but when you get the equipment, you know where to head if you have problems!
