Recent File list (Word XP)

Why is my Recently Used File List greyed out?

Check the setting for recently used files in the General tab of Tools | Options... If this setting is also disabled, or if the File menu contains the names of recently used files, but the menu items are disabled, it makes me wonder if you have used some kind of tweaking application that disables document history.

You can try the various steps outlined in Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post> to see if you can pinpoint the cause.

As Hans mentioned, it sounds like a tweaking utility. Check TweakUI, under the IE settings, & make sure that "Add new documents to Documents on Start Menu" is not checked. Checking it will prevent recent files from being available on any Office application.
P.S. As I reread my post, I wonder if I have this backwards. If you have TweakIE, try it both ways & post back.

If you use a document management system (e.g., at the office), the software usually disables the MRU lists so that you must access files through the DMS.

Also, it's possible for a "policy" to be set in your registry to do this, but if the computer has not logged in to a corporate environment, that isn't very likely.

Thanks Gents... it turned out to be a box inTweakUI that needed to be ticked. I didn't even know the dashed thing was there !

What did you actually have to do to get the MRU back? Was it checking or UNchecking something?
Thanks,
