New Dell My Way???

I'm thinking of purchasing a new Dell desktop for the kids, but I want to reformat the hard drive and take off all of the extraneous stuff they put on that I don't want/need. Will I receive original CD's for the OS or some kind of recovery CD??? If I do receive a recovery CD, what's the best way of wiping the hard drive and starting over with just what I want on it????
Thanks...

Doesn't Dell allow you to specify what software you want loaded/not loaded?

Re: New Dell My Way???

That would be my third option, which should work. But I'd check with the Dell sales person or their technical support first.

My second option would simply to uninstall the unwanted software from Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs, where appropriate entries for all installed software should live.

You must really hate this software if you're prepared to go back to bare metal and reinstall from scratch!

That's just my personal, anal way of doing things. Gimme XP OS and Office 2K and that's about it. I'll add other stuff as I need it. What I don't need is all the stuff taking up real estate on the hard drive. Thanks for the info and have a great Turkey Day...

I think Dell probably has stopped selling Office 2000. However, you can get WordPerfect 2002 pre-installed for almost nothing and you might as well keep it around for those occasional conversion emergencies, or when you want to open an untrusted Word document without executing unseen macros.

Do you think I can build a comparable rig with 17"monitor and 256meg ram for about $700, and where's the best place to shop for components???

Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL code.

Yes you can build a rig for about $700 US. First place to shop is http://www.zipzoomfly.com and then http://www.mwave.com. The local electronic stores will provide you with a CD-RW for $9.99 after MIR and before taxes, a 17" monitor for $79 to 89 after MIR and before taxes, a modem, mouse keyboard, 50 to 100 CD-R disks and NIC for $0 after MIR and before taxes. Go to www.saveateagle.com for your software.
