Explorer displays 8.3 file names

For some strange reason my WINNT 4 PC shows 8.3 file names in windows explorer. Where do I go to change this back to long file names? Can't find anything in MS KB or google.

Do you mean NT Explorer shows 8.3 filenames only? Or as well as Long File Names? (I presume some of the files actually HAVE long file names!!!)

Is this for FAT or NTFS disk partitions?

The file names have been truncated to 8.3 with the usual formatting e.g., mydocu~1.doc. All file names are displayed this way.

Were these files copied off the macine and then copied back to this machine? If so how was this copying done?

Sorry seems like I have mislead everyone. The problem is with the files on a CD. W2K explorer shows long file names. WINNT explorer shows only short filenames. Consequently the CD will not run properly on WINNT as the program on it calls other files with the longfilename. So the question is why does W2K show long filenames and WINNT short ones.

Where and how was this CD burned?

I would say that the CDs files are the problem NOT your NT machine. Take this CD to another machine and see if you have the same problem.

The CD is a Training CD supplied by an instrument company. Probably done in house.
I have tried the CD on 3 NT PC's with the same result - short filenames.
How is W2K able to see the long filenames?
