    Copy/Paste Text (Word XP)

Hello, This has happened to me several times before and I wonder why it does that. I select text, whether from a website (text only without any links) or from a doc. and once I want to paste it into another empty doc it gives me the msg. "There is unsufficent memory or disk space. Close extra windows and save your work." That happens whether I do or don't close all the open windows/programs. So, what's wrong with my memory??? I'm working in Win XP and have plenty of memory, well, so I thought ;-P Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tira

    1. Check that you don't have a virus infection: make sure that your anti-virus software is up-to-date and run a complete scan.

    2. Check that you don't have spyware on your PC: see KenK's <!post=Anti Adware / Spyware / Hijack,296439>Anti Adware / Spyware / Hijack<!/post>.

    3. Try the steps in Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post>.

From my experience, Word seems to "re-download" text/graphics copied from the web. Some of this will end up being inserted as links, and some as text. It's rather complicated and messy. As part of this process, Word may be grabbing something that it can't properly process, and giving you this error that I associate with "I'm confused" more than anything else.

What I suggest is copying only one or the other, text or graphics, at a time. For text, after copying to the clipboard, use Edit>Paste

    Hi Tira:
In addition to what's been mentioned, there may be a couple other causes. Do you have any clipboard extenders installed...I have Smartboard & ocassionally get that message. Closing & reopening Smartboard cures it. I have Win 98 & when I run low on resources, this can happen; I've heard that Win XP is better at not leaking resources, however.

Thank you all for your help and input. Virus, hmm I don't like the sound of that! I have checked out some of the links, they are great even just for informational value. I have actually copied ONLY text. It has happened to me before by simply copying from one to another doc. I'll remember the "Paste Special" for next time and try it. I'm not aware of any clipboard extenders software on my computer unless they snuck it in without my knowledge. Could that be part of a sofware package included with a new computer or would I have to physically install it? Thanks, Tira

    One other trick:

Paste into an HTML editor like FrontPage first (if you have one installed), then from FrontPage to Word.

FrontPage seems to deal much better with complicated or buggy HTML.

I doubt that any of these utilities just come with a new computer. I just thought there might be a possibility that you were using one.
    Good luck,
