VB Pop Up Box if New Files in Folder (Windows 2000)

    Hi,

I know next to nothing about VB, I am self taught to a low level in VBA within Access.

Once upon a time I went on a C++ course and learnt how to draw circles and colour them in but that is about my programming limit...

I was wondering if it is possible to have some code pop up a box if a file is added to a folder or any of its sub-folders...

We have a shared folder on a server, that someone scans in invoices for me and I add them to a budget management database.

What i don't get told is when there are new ones there!

If I could have a box that popped up saying there is a new file I can then go and check!!

Apologies if this is gibberish but I thought it didn't harm to ask!!

Thanks for your help and patience!!

    Thanks HansV!

I've downloaded the code as instructed from the site, and there is an .exe file for stoping the spy but not one for starting it!!

How can I get the program working??

Sorry if this is basic question...

The main form in the FolderSpy.vbp project contains "Start Spying" and "Stop Spying" command buttons; when you click "Start Spying", StopSpy.exe will be launched automatically.

StopSpy.exe is provided in the zip file, but FolderSpy.exe isn't. You will have to open FolderSpy.vbp in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and create an exe file from it (select File | Make FolderSpy.exe). Alternatively, you can incorporate the code in your own project.

I have attached the zipped compiled exe; I can't guarantee it'll work on all systems.

Re: VB Pop Up Box if New Files in Folder (Windows 2000)

Thanks so much that seems to work nicely!!

Does it continue to work, as long as i don't click stop spying i.e. can i quit the screen?

Does this work continually? i.e. even if my pc is shut down overnight will it tell me if the contents have changed overnight?

Thanks so much for your help!

You can activate other programs, but on my PC, the dialog box notifying a change doesn't pop up over other programs, so you'll have to activate FolderSpy (using Alt+Tab or the Task Bar) to see it.

FolderSpy only works as long as it runs. If you shut down your PC, FolderSpy obviously doesn't run, and if you start it again the next day it won't tell you that something has changed in the meantime.

    Hans,
Is there some way to make this or some other program keep a log of which files or subfolders were modified?

    Thanks!!

Sorry, I don't know enough about the API calls that are used in this application. Something for <!profile=MarkD>MarkD<!/profile>?

Re: VB Pop Up Box if New Files in Folder (Windows

There are small Applications (mostly freeware) that will run in your system tray and keep selected Windows - such as Stop Spying - always on top. The one I use from time to time is no longer available on the internet. Searching Google, however, using the words

    window always on top

brings up a number of hits.
