    Windows Update (Xp Pro)

I am encountering a problem when I run Windows Update on my laptop running XP Pro. Update identifies 3 "critical updates and service packs": Cumulative Security Update for IE 6 SP1 (HB824145); Security Update for Microsoft Windows XP (KB828035); and Security Update for Windows XP (KB810217). When I click Install, I get an error message "The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. This software will not be installed."

It completes and tells me that KB824145 was installed but the other two were not. If I re-run Windows Update, it again identifies all updates as not installed and recommended.

I do not know whether this is a problem particular to these updates or whether something in my system will not allow any updated to be installed. I tried to check the Microsoft Knowledge Base but did not find anything that pertained directly to this situation.

    Re: Windows Update (Xp Pro)

Additional information on this problem: I ran Windows Update on my other computer and these same three updates installed without a problem. The problem would appear to be something on my laptop that is not properly recognizing the Windows logo testing information on these updates. If that is true, I must assume that I will not be able to install any future updates either until I get this problem resolved.

I have written to Dell, my computer supplier, for support and have gotten nothing but gibberish so far - comments like "not every update released by Microsoft will automatically be compatible with our system, so please don't download any updates without asking Microsoft" and proceeded to tell me how to disable windows automatic update. Or, the even better advice "The updates are from microsoft update centre are genralised one and hence can cause compatibilty issues with your system. Dell does not not recommend our customers to download and install those upgrade unless Dell gives the consent on installation of those updates."

Has anyone encountered a problem with Update like this????

Microsoft has a Windows Update Troubleshooter site. Look for When installing an update you receive the following message: "Software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing". Hopefully one of the four suggestions there will help.

Well, as usual, I continue to find superior assistance via Woody's Lounge than that provided by any hardware manufacturer or software provider. Not only does the advice work, but it is provided in a timely and very professional manner.

The 3rd suggestion on the site you reference suggested to check and turn on the Cryptographic Services. Sure enough, somehow mine had been turned off. The updates then installed without problem.

Wonder if I should share this knowledge with the "experts" at Dell?

    Thanks again!!!!!!

Wonder if it would do any good? I have a strong feeling you would be wasting oxygen that could be put to better use. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

They have a searchable forum. Maybe someone else would find it in the future if you were to post it there...
