MSN Messenger 6 expert required!

Lounging persons with long memories (at least, longer than mine) will remember a lengthy conversation in Scuttlebutt some months ago about the best means of attaching a webcam to the top of a TFT screen. You do remember!

Now that our expatriates have managed at last to get their webcam set up, we came to try it last night, from darkest Gloucester to brightest Sydney, for the Very First Time!

The webcam worked, Instant Messaging worked, but the "audio conversation" didn't.

We couldn't hear anything whatever at our end, and at the other end they could hear themselves, very slightly, but nothing else. The "audio conversation" always timed out after about a minute or so. No other error messages... The audio had been set up at our end using the Logitech software, so that the speakers gave the clackety test sound, and the microphone volume bar went into the yellow area, at least, when someone was speaking. I rebooted the PC this end, but the same results. Nothing in the Event Logs to give any clues, and I haven't yet managed to find any log that might be kept of the Instant Messaging communications.

Has anyone any idea what might be the problem, or where to start looking? It seems unlikely to be hardware, as far as I can see. Many Thanks!

In case the software might be relevant, it is:

John--

I don't know if this will help. It may be way too elementary--and I'm not sure about the equipment at their end, but I have a Logitech Webcam very much like yours. Ck. these:

I have had all sorts of problems with MSN audio and firewalls. With some of my colleagues we can get audio to work if one of us initiates the conversation but not if the other one does. Sometimes we get it to work on the 5th or 6th try, with no clear reason why the previous attempts didn't work.

A place to start. MSN Messenger Audio Problems

Also if you use a router it can be blocking your Audio.

I'm sure that the budget couldn't extend to it, but SquidCam - now at the reduced price of USD15 (until Dec 24 - when it goes back up to USD25) - is definitely a good investment. Got it up and running (Austria to Sweden) on the first run. It also works between Windows and Macs.

, folks, for the comments!

SMBP: yes, useful stuff, as ever! SNDVOL32 didn't do anything but the Sound Recorder showed that the microphone could record voice, so must be working! The Logitech technical notes were useful in pointing out where to look, and pointing up that MS have swopped most of these things around since W98...

Stuart: that's comforting, in a sort of negative way!

Cowboy: from your links I spotted that there had been an update to MSN Messenger 6.1, available from 21 Nov, so I've downloaded/installed this, ready for our next try... Therevappear to be subtle differences brtween 6.1 and 6.0. I will look through the other links you gave

I myself use WinXp Pro SP1 with MSN Messenger 6.1 and have no problems with Audio Coversations using MSN. I am behind a Router and a Firewall and it does not effect me in any way.
I cannnot use Netmeeting, because Audio won't work with it. Netmeeting uses the old Protocal and it wouldn't work behind a Firewall or Router and even some ISP's. MSN messenger 6.1 uses the New Protocal and seems to work fine.

SquidCam is NOT "another webcam". It's software. It does support Logitec webcams. I agree that it is almost certainly not a hardware problem. make sure all the dust goes into the vaccum cleaner - and not anywhere else.

Further ploughing through the suggested references made me find an update to almost all Logitech webcam software (to version 8.1.1), dating from near the end of October.

It is 37 MB in size. Yes, thirty-seven Megabytes.

For a webcam. The mind boggles...

You had me curious, since I have a Logitech cam...apparently the download includes the ImageStudio component, which is where all the bulk is coming from. Seems the blokes at Logitech have taken a page from Microsoft's bloatware book.
