    PIII Chip?

    Hi,

If a COMPAQ PC's BIOS says it has a "PIII 133Mhz" chip, how does this translate?

Is it actually a PIII 1.3Ghz chip?

    Help!

Don't have a Compaq. Obviously can't answer the question. Why don't you download the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> Belarc Advisor and see what it says?

    Re: PIII Chip?

I suspect Compaq's BIOS writers know how to determine the speed of a CPU chip, so I would believe what it says, particularly if the PC is fairly old...

    Re: PIII Chip?

I don't think there ever was a Pentium III 133 MHz. Pentium II started at 233 MHZ (in 1997), Pentium III at 450 MHz (in 1999)

Bigaldoc's suggestion of using Belarc Advisor will probably turn up the truth.

    Re: PIII Chip?

You may be right, as usual!

I'm still running NT4 on what Belarc tells me is a 133 MHz Pentium (presumably Pentium I, although of course it wasn't called that, since they didnt know they were doing a II at the time!).

A good reference is the Intel Microprocessor Quick Reference Guide, which tells you more than you might ever want to know about the matter!

I think what your seeing is the Front Bus Speed is set at 133. Pent III running FBS 133 or 66 or 100. I have a Pent III 933 MHZ, running at 133 FBS.

Oooh, I'm impressed! You da man, Cowboy..... Personally, I didn't think Pentium IIIs went higher than 800 or 900, but what do I know. I'm still getting by with a PIII 600.

    Re: PIII Chip?

Al, There are some new Slot 1 P III processors that run up to 1.4 GHz, these are aftermarket replacements, I never saw one installed as a "new" system. Intel sells them. Just remember that the FSB effects (or is it affects) the end CPU speed. a CPU with a 10.5 multiplier on a 66 FSB = 693MHz while a 100 FSB = 1.05GHz and 133 FSB=1.4GHz.

Al, I bet ya could get that 600 MHZ running at 700 MHZ.
