comp keeps connecting to intrnet without permision (Internet Explorer 6.0)

Right. I turn my computer on. I connect to internet. I finish on internet so i disconnect. Every 30 seconds or so, it connects to internet without my permission and i'm forever clicking CANCEL. What is causing this? Is it a program, a virus, a setting that needs to be changed.

Thanks,
Boilingmud.

Although it's a lot of work for this purpose, you could install the ZoneAlarm firewall and see what programs it says are trying to access the Internet. You can deny access to any you don't like, and reconfigure the others. As a bonus, it's a pretty good firewall.

It could be your email program, Windows Update, any software requesting a update, weather station, news feed, stock watcher and the likes of Real Player has been to be included on this list.

I agree with the above post, install ZoneAlarm of any other firewall so you can control what is using your Internet connection.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I already have a firewall called AGNITUM OUTPOST FIREWALL. Is that better than ZoneAlarm? Will it do the same thing as Zone Alarm?

You seem to know what you're talking about so you can tell me what's going on.

I'm not sure how outpost firewall works but all this was coming up in my BLOCKED list

REASON: ICMP Traffic
Application: n/a
REMOTE PORT: Echo Request
Direction: Inbound
Protocol: ICMP

Now if it's in the BLOCKED list, doesn't that mean that it's BLOCKED!

thanks.

Yes, that's an inbound PING packet that your firewall rejected or threw in the garbage. What would be really interesting is to see what applications are sending out.

Does Agnitum/Outpost let you lock down outbound transmissions by application? Most firewalls let you block particular port numbers or services, but very few let you say "yes to iTunes" and "no to RealAudio," etc. And even "application" blocking is imperfect because applications apparently can use components of Internet Explorer to evade detection.

Maybe if you turn off all outbound connectivity in the firewall and then see if it identifies what kind of packet wnats to go out, and to where, that will be just as useful?

If Agnitum Outpost does not lock down Outbound Traffic by Application, then Sygate Personal Firewall does. As for the IE component issue, you always have the choice of locking down IE!

Is the connection dial-up? If so, you might check out this thread: <post#=267574 >post 267574 </post#>
