Intel webcam - can't detect camera

My son-in-law and I have identical Intel Create-and-share web cameras. His worked fine with his old slug computer, but he can't get it going with his new hot-shot computer. I ran the configuration wizard--sound and microphone work fine, but it tells me there's no "video capture device" installed. I presume they mean the camera. Funny, but when I go to Control Panel/Device Manager, it shows the camera as "working properly." I've checked the cable--it's plugged into the USB port. I can't think of anything else I can check of a physical nature. Suggestions?

Have you reset the system since installing the camera? USB devices are generally "Hot Swappable" by nature, but there are exceptions...

By resetting the system, do you mean re-booting? If that's what you mean, no I haven't done that just yet. I'll try that next and come back to you. Thank you for the prompt replies!

OK...I've rebooted. The camera's config wizard still says we have no video capture device installed. Next...?

Install one.

click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
Click on Multimedia. The last tab is Devices. What is listed under Video Capture Device?

It shows only "Microsoft WDM Image Capture" (whatever that is).

Re: Intel webcam - can't detect camera

Thanks again. I read the material in the article you suggested, and I do not feel it applies in this case. I don't fully understand all that techie mumbo-jumbo, but all that aside, the article says the problem was resolved with the release of Win98 SE. We're using SE on this system, so I presume this article should not apply, n'est pas?

The next thing I would do is remove the drivers, and re-install them... perhaps that will correct the problem.

Actually..

Go to microsoft and download the latest version of NetMeeting, and Install it. this may be part of Internet Explorer...

This will update the WDM driver, and *may* resolve your problem.

Re: Intel webcam - can't detect camera

I was thinking the same thing. Now, what I propose to do is go to the files for this program (i.e., Intel Create and Share...) and use its built-in self-destruct (uninstall) utility. 'Zat what you'd do? BTW: Have you had any personal experience with this particular web camera? Do you know whether it requires Dial-up Networking to function? As I peruse my son-in-law's system, I notice that DUN does not appear in Control Panel. Shouldn't it?

DUN will be listed under My computer... at least, it should be.. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I don't have personal experience using this particular camera, but have used plenty of USB devices.

What version of I.E. are you using there? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
