    Password Recovery

Hi, does anyone know how to recover a password for a Windows 2000 server I have just gone and locked myself out of?

    Re: Password Recovery

An administrator's password? By nature of design the password hashes in Windows 2000 are difficult to bypass. Unless someone else has better ideas, I would suggest one of the following:

    1) A parallel installation of Windows, which will hopefully allow you access to the data, or 2) using a tool known as l0phtcrack or something similar, being aware of the dubious origins of some of these programs. You might want to read this article which was written with NT 4.0 in mind but much of which applies to products based on NT (2000 and XP).

In short, there is no easy way to recover the password, so good luck. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

There is a tool available from winternals which allows you to change your local Administrator password when it has been lost. But it doesn't come cheap.
