Deleted File Recovery Software Sought

My site is in the process of upgrading from WinNT to Win2000 and, at the same time, from Novell to Win2000 Server. One of the extremely useful features we've lost is the Novell Salvage feature. This enables recovery of a deleted file from a network volume, provided the file wasn't deleted too long ago, (survival time after deletion depends on how much free space there is and data churn on the server).

I'm told that Win2000 Server doesn't have an equivalent tool and this is causing a great deal of work for our Server Team because all file restores need to be taken from backup tapes. This makes recovery of a deleted file a quite lengthy process. Also, files created in the morning and deleted in the afternoon, (it happens!) are completely lost as they've never been backed up to tape. Such files would have been easy to get back via Salvage.

So I'm looking for an (inexpensive) alternative to Salvage for a Windows Server environment. I've looked at Executive Software's Undelete package, but I'm not sure I can persuade the people with the purse-strings to pay as much for a feature that was free before, (aspecially after the amount of wonga they've already shelled out for the upgrade process as a whole).

Ideally, something small-scale and shareware would fit the bill, but I'm not sure such a package exists. Can anyone suggest anything?

Many thanks.
Regards,

Steve

Up front let me say that I know very little about server software, so I don't know if this comes anywhere close to what you want. I also don't think it will recognize network paths, since it's intended to be booted from floppy on the "sick" drive. Maybe you should just take a look to see what you think. It's the only one I've used for several years, so I don't know what a Google would yield.

Like BigAl, I have limited/ little knowledge of server issues, but I'm not bad at sniffing out things . Some of the offerings here might be of interest.

Steve,

As far as I know, there is no Windows tool that's as good as Netware's Salvage utility. If this is important to your site, your best bet would be to upgrade straight to Windows 2003, which has a user-serviceable undelete function built right in. However, I don't believe that even this is as good as Salvage.

Hi Steve,

I don't know about servers either, but here's another piece of recovery soft for Windows: PC Inspector File Recovery.

Thanks to you all for offering suggestions. I've looked at all of the sites mentioned and tried the products. I'm going to keep PC Inspector File Recovery for personal user but unfortunately it's not applicable to the original problem. As with all of the other suggested packages, it's purely for local drives physically present in the PC, not network drives.

I'm sure Jim's suggestion of upgrading to Win 2003 Server would fall on deaf ears as they've just girded their collective loins to embrace the upgrade to Win2000. Anything further would, I fear, be an upgrade, (and cost) too far.

Still looking, I'm afraid...
Regards,

Steve
