    Favorites Error 389 (IE 6.0 SP1)

A day or two ago, I clicked on Favorites > Organize Favorites and this error msg. appeared.

"Error has occured in this dialog. Error 389 Invalid Class String" This occurs each time I try to organize my Favorites.

What does the error mean and how is it fixed?

Also, IE isn't listed in Add or Remove Programs. That was the way I repaired IE 6.0. Is there a way to make it appear?

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Duchess--

Didn't find a lot helpful on IE error sites.or the MSKB on the error. You don't have the option to repair IE in Add/Remove in Win XP which you didn't say was your OS but I think I remember is. Why not try System File Checker which is often successful in repairing IE?

Everything you wrote is true, but I would like to correct the error and get to my favorites from the web. I perfer not to have to come out of IE and open Windows Explorer. Doing it the way you suggest is a band-aid. I thank you for the suggestion but what I really need is a fix.

I thank you for the KB Article, I will print and save it until the need arises.

Hello, my faithful friend, Sam riding to the rescue of a distressed maiden (smile). Your memory hasn't failed you, I do run XP Home Edition.

About SFC, I read on some forum, that when you use it, some drivers may have to be reinstalled. Is that true? I don't hardly need more problems and work hunting new drivers down. . If you say that SFC does not do that, then I will take your word as gospel and run it.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about that error msg. I've use Google, MKBase and Lord knows what else trying to find some information about it. It's got to be fixed and asking Dell is a trip. Half the time I can't understand the tech and they can't understand me. When I get one of those foreign guys or gals, I hang up and call back later, trying to reach someone who understands English.

I'll wait to use SFC until the next time I hear from you.

You can organize your favorites easily in Windows Explorer. The Favorites menu is in fact a folder, and its submenus are subfolders; the favorites themselves are shortcuts. You can create new subfolders, move items to other (sub)folders etc. The default location for Favorites in Windows XP is

    Cocuments and SettingsusernameFavorites

About repairing IE 6.0, see MSKB article How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP.

Gloria, the "fix" suggested in the newsgroups is to perform the steps outlined in the MSKB article I referred to. The first of these is to run sfc /scannow, as suggested by SMBP too; it is pretty smart in Windows XP.

I've got the KB Article # 318378 re: How to Reinstall or Repair IE and OE in Windows XP. Thank you very much, I'll give it a shot and will return with the results (or non-results).

Gloria SFC is considered very safe, and it is never known to cause you to have to replace drivers. I think on one of the previous threads you started, there are a number of links on SFC. Its job is to go to dllcache either on the HD or the CD and replace any corrupt files it finds. It doesn't do anything to drivers. The only rare criticisms I've seen are reports it may miss fixing files. I appreciate and always recommend the MSKB on repairing/reinstalling IE, and notice that the first step is to run SFC. However, if moving to the regedits is your choice of a first step--fine but remember to File>Export registry key on each key as a precaution and whichever way fixes you. SFC is not going to leave you missing anything--that's for sure. Whoever wrote that is wrong, and I have a collection of SFC literature if you want to see it.

I ran across this piece of info on SFC from Kelly's A-Z articles under "S" I thought I'd pass on:

SFC Creates a log - Start/Run/Msinfo32/Tools/File Signature Verification Ulitity

    Re: Favorites Error 389 (IE 6.0 SP1)

Thank you Sam, my faithful friend. I typed in Run, the information you sent me and for my trouble, I got a Windows cannot find msg. I used Search to locate Misinfo32 & System File Checker. neither was found. Searched for *.log and found 178 but alas, not the one I was looking for.

I have great news for you and all the loungers that are tracking this post. I found how to get rid of that error msg. None of the fixes in the KB worked, so I put my thinking cap on and got what I thought was a brilliant idea. I would merely re-install XP over itself and miracle of miracles, it worked. It was such a simple solution that I never thought to use it until Sunday. <img src=/S/stupidme.gif border=0 alt=stupidme width=30 height=30>

While checking the log files I found that there were KB logs, you don't get any useful information from them and why Microsoft bothered to put them there, I'll never know. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

I thank you and everyone who posted suggestions, but now I consider this one FIXED. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

I'm glad it worked Gloria, but I wish doing that always had such sterling results because it doesn't.

Well if nothing else works, what did I have to lose but a little time. It was a win, lose situation and that meant there was a 50 -50 chance of it working.

Sometimes reinstalling XP over itself makes a number of problems go away fast; othertimes it creates them. We have had some recent tough problems people solved by doing this--I think one of the keys is that if you're well enough backed up so that you don't lose critical information you need, you will come out a winner--backup is, I guess a lot like insurance. You don't think much about it when you don't need it, but when you do it's gold.
