    Lines in Word 97 (Word 97 SR2)

Whenever I use the underline to make a line in Word 97, after I press enter, the line changes to a dark black line and I cannot change or delete the line. I can move the line, just not delete it. Is there a setting that tells Word to do this. How can I fix this? It is very frustrating!!

I would go looking at your settings for "Autoformat As You Type". This is the likely culprit and just about everything there should be turned off if you want to wrestle control of your documents back from Microsoft.

After the line has been inserted you can remove it by using the Format > Borders and Shading dialog box.

That automatic line is frustrating. The control is in the Format menu, like Stuart says, but many times I can't get that line to behave as I want it to. I gave up, and used single column tables. Then in the Table content menu, set the borders to only be the bottom of each cell.
