    Date field Updates (2002)

I use a template to create invoices for my business. Of course, the template has a date field which updates each time the document is saved and this causes problems for me since I need to know the date the invoice was originally created.

Any ideas on how I can make the date field only update once (when the document/invoice is created)?

    Thanks!

One possibility is to insert a CREATEDATE field instead of a DATE or SAVEDATE field.

Another possibility is to create a Document_New event procedure in the ThisDocument module of the template that inserts the date as static text (not a field) into the header or footer.

Perfect! I switched to the CREATEDATE field and it's working exactly the way I expected.

    Thanks a lot!

The problem with using the CREATEDATE field is that ir never updates. If you start a letter one day and finish it on a later date (maybe after sending it out for review) it's going to have the wrong date. What I do is convert the DATE field to the actual date when I'm ready to send the letter out. You do this by selecting the field and pressing <Ctrl>+<Shift>+<F9>. To help me remember this, I include this instruction as hidden text right after the date field.

    Hi Andrew,

Of course, if you used a SAVEDATE field and saved the letter immediately before printing, you'd automatically get the correct date without having to remember to convert the field to plain text.

    Cheers
