Re: Numbering Styles (Outline) not resetting back to 1 (Word 2000)

    Hi Andrew,

One way of doing this is to use Heading Level 1 with no numbering, then use Heading Levels 2-4 for the Heading Level numbering system you want, with each level being linked to the previous level. Then whenever you want to restart the numbering, insert a Heading Level 1 para immediately beforehand. You might want to format the Heading Level 1style as hidden text with no leading/trailing spaces, etc too, so as to minimise it's impact on the document's layout.

    Cheers

Just an update - this is NOT using Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3 etc., but using our own style Number List 1, Number List 2, Number List 3 - it's the Number List 1 that is not working here.
    Noote.

Numbering Styles (Outline) not resetting back to 1 (Word 2000)

We set an outline numbering style in our document. However, whenever we are elsewhere in the document and apply the style, the numbering continues. We have fixed levels 2 and 3 but the first level just won't reset. For example: we would have
    1. First level
    a. Second level
    i. Third level
and so on. Now further down the document - even pages ahead if we use our Outline numbering style again we would get:

    2. First level (but we want this to reset and start at 1 again)
    a. Second level (this we fixed and is reset)
    i. Third level (this we also fixed and is reset each time)

How do we fix the first level so that whenever we start a new numbering list in the document it will start at 1 again instead of continuing the numbering from above? We currently have to go in and right-click to reset. If we don't use outline numbering for our styles then all the numbering gets screwy!

NOTE: To clarify - this is NOT using Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3 - but our own style, Number List 1, Number List 2, Number List 3 - i.e. this is used specifically for a numbered list (ordered list) as opposed to using a bulleted list (unordered list) within paragraphs and is not connected to any Heading levels.

    Hi Danuta,

What you are seeing is how Outline level numbering is designed to work. It's designed this way to handle chapter numbering. You will need to visit Restart for every instance of your Number Level 1.

Levels 2, 3 and lower may be set to automatically 'restart' after a higher level, but level 1 is the highest level, so there is no Restart option.

As Macropod suggests, you could configure the Level 1 style to be 'hidden' and apply it to each paragraph immediately preceding your Level 2 (to be treated as Level 1 for numbering purposes), but this is cumbersome.

Others on this board may be able to suggest a way to number independent outline lists programmatically, but AFAIK, there is no way to do this from the user interface. Your numbering is working correctly. Restart the numbering each time you apply Number Level 1.
