Where do I find OE? (WInME; IE 6)

Unaware that it is required by Outlook, I removed OE using Add/Remove programs. I need to reinstall it but can't find it on any of my CD's nor on the Microsoft IE site. Can I download and install just OE? If so, where do I find it?

    TIA

    Bob,

Outlook Express is included in IE6 SP1, this will give the the latest version of OE. Don't think OE is available separately..

You can Download it at OUTLOOK

    Bob--

Viking has taken you to the right place. He always does, but what he means in going there is that OE is part of the files of IE, so you will get it when you download IE6SP1.

Re: Where do I find OE? (WInME; IE 6)

    Thanks Guys!

I followed the link and downloaded SP-1. The first time I ran the executable, I got errors saying that required files were not downloaded. I did it again and started the update. It's been running for a while now.

Is there any way to extract just the OE from the SP update and install it? I've already applied SP-1.

    Thanks again for your help.

Don't think so. It's pretty well integrated into the IE6-SP1 D/L, so you'll have to run the complete update.

Re: Where do I find OE? (WInME; IE 6)

As noted, you'll probably have to reinstall (or repair) your installation of IE 6 SP1. If you look at the readme.txt file installed with IE (located by default in C:Program FilesInternet Explorer) it reads in part:

"Except in Windows XP, Outlook Express 6 SP 1 can only be installed and run in conjunction with Internet Explorer 6 SP 1. If Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 is uninstalled on a platform other than Windows XP, Outlook Express 6 SP 1 will be uninstalled as well."

    Also see MSKB Article 307295:

OLEXP: Outlook Express Version 6 Is Available

    Article states in part:

Outlook Express 6 is installed as a component of Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. You can install Internet Explorer 6 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98 or later or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a (SP6a) or later. You can also install Internet Explorer 6 as an upgrade to any existing version of Internet Explorer. For information about how to download and install Internet Explorer 6, view the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie

For additional information about Internet Explorer 6, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
293513 Availability and Description of Internet Explorer 6

Since it appears evident that OE is not available as a "stand-alone" installation, you may want to try "repairing" your installation of IE 6. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, select "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1" from list, then select Repair option (see attached pic) - the dialog box may look different on your system, I'm using Windows XP; the "Add a Component" option was disabled on my system, you could try this option if enabled & see if it "fixes" OE, or try Repair option.

Re: Where do I find OE? (WInME; IE 6)

OK, tried that and it ran for a while then went back into the IE SP-1 that stops downloading on file 3897. It doesn't stop responding (according to CTL/ALT/DEL) but the disk stops spinning (even left it running for 12 hours to see if it would advance).

Went to Control Panel again and tried to find out how to uninstall IE entirely so I could re-install it and apply updates. The only option is to repair it, not remove it.

    What am I missing?

    TIA

Re: Where do I find OE? (WInME; IE 6)

I have no idea what is happening, but if whatever it is runs for 12 hours with no progress then something is seriously wrong. As for uninstalling IE, since IE is an integral component of Windows, this can be a convoluted procedure. Recommend refer to MSKB Article 293907 for more information:

    Bob--

I read and reread this thread and I still don't know what happens when you open up Outlook Express. If we have an idea what you're seeing, maybe we can give you a more specific fix for OE. How is OE working? Will it open up? There are updates for OE6 and also fixes in addition to the good links you've been given but I'm not sure what's going on with your OE. Since you're after OE specifically, I'm getting the idea that IE is working fine, but you're having problems with OE.

Also Bob I have some general repair links here:

Post 295656: General Repair Methods for IE and OE

    and

    Post 295483 Updates for OE.

There are other updates--one recently in October 2003 but I don't think you've told us what you're tyring to fix in Outlook Express. Knowing specifically would help.

Re: Where do I find OE? (WInME; IE 6)

    Many thanks for the response.

I uninstalled OE from my system using the Control Panel capabilities. There is no OE on my system to load or try to load. I do have Outlook, and when I try to load it I get a message that says that I must have OE installed to run Outlook. I'll give the repair links a try and let you know what happened.

    Thanks again.

Re: Where do I find OE? (WInME; IE 6)

    Bob--

"I followed the link and downloaded SP-1." So in other words when you wrote this on December 3 you didn't get it downloaded--you had trouble completing the installation. Why not try to use System Restore or scanreg /restore in the run box in Windows ME and restore to a point before you had the problem? While of course you cannot use SR to uninstall programs, you certainly could try to restore to a point before this happened. System Restore defaults to 90 days if it is running, and you haven't moved the lever in System Properties on the System Restore tab, and there are 5 criteria where points are also set--one of them being every 24 hours, and another being when you install or uninstall a program via the Windows Installer or the Install Shield or both in concert.

Ed by SMBP: Why not try to download IE6SP1 again if System Restore is not successful?

Re: Where do I find OE? (WInME; IE 6)

I would try several maybe 5-6 System Restore points to before this happened before concluding that you can't be successful with System Restore and I would try as many scanreg /restore points as you have--which is a default of 5 but you can modify that with cab files to make it up to 100 in Win ME.

Re: Where do I find OE? (WInME; IE 6)

    By the way Bob--

Can you humor me for a second, and hit the Windows key +R and bring up your "run box" and type in "msimn.exe" without the quotes and hit enter.

If you don't bring OE up, I want you to try this which may get it installed for you:

Click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%Inf. Locate the MSOE50.INF file. Right click it (the file) and select Install. I don't have an ME machine to try this, so I'm not sure if this last suggestion works with Win ME, but you can try. I also wonder if there is a way for you to extract this folder from the Windows ME disk in the I386 folder and show all hidden Windows files as well as all hidden files and folders and locate the MSOE50.INF file in the I386 folder on the CD?
