    Outlook hijacks currently open web pages (Outlook 2K)

    One of those minor annoyances, that I wonder if anyone else has solved.
    When using Outlook and IE, if I have a web page open and I receive an email with a URL in it and click on that URL; Outlook switches to the last IE window I had opened and redirects it to the URL. Now, usually if I have a web page open it is because I am using it as a reference, and I do not like this behaviour.
    So for now, if I find an URL in an email I wish to investigate, I open an empty IE page and then return to the Email and click on the URL.

    Does anyone have a better suggestion?

    Sure do. Posted it a while back on the IE board.

    Inside IE, click Tools, then Internet Options, then click the Advanced Tab. A little more then halfway down the 'Browsing' category, you'll find an option called 'Reuse windows for launching shortcuts'. You currently have that checked. Uncheck it. Now, whenever you click on a hyperlink (from any source) it will launch in a new browser window. I have a keyboard with programmable buttons, and I like to put important sites, or sites I am developing as the commands behind those buttons. Before I found (and changed) that setting, using those buttons would take over one of my existing windows. It was a pain.

    Nice one, Drew!

    It would take rather more than a lifetime to determine the bizarre behaviour of any of the Microsoft programs with all possible combinations of ticks and non-ticks in check boxes...

    Drew, do you know an equivalent fix for Netscape 7.x?

    The following tip comes from Mozilla - on which Netscape 7x is based. You should have a Profile folder in something like Cocuments and Settings[User Name]Application DataNetscapeProfiles - in which there will already be a number of files including prefs.js. Create a new file called user.js. In that new file insert the line:

    user_pref("advanced.system.supportDDEExec", false);

    You will need to close and reopen the browser suite in order for this setting to "take". For more tips, see this page. For more help on your Profiles folder, see this page.

    I never got to Netscape 7.x - bugs in 6.x made me stick to 4.7 until finally switching to Outlook. However, 4.7 Messenger (and, I think, 6.x) had a perfectly sensible way of dealing with this (the lack of this in Outlook, and also the lack of a display of the URL with mouseover in a mail, are two of my biggest Outlook gripes) - you simply right click on the link in your mail and choose 'open in new browser window'. It's the way things should work, really, and I suspect it'll be there in 7.x too. This doesn't address, of course, URL's in non-Netscape programs, but I hope it helps.

    I say "grrrrr" with second-level flyout menus for routine commands, but this will work.
