    mail merge in Word 2002 with inserted symbols (Word 2002, Excel 2002, Wind

    I frequently use mail merge, but have just run into a problem that i can't solve. I was sending a number of letters to addresses in Poland. THose addresses required special characters, which i inserted in the addresses in an Excel 2002 spreadsheet, through the usual Insert|Symbol. When I did the merge to bring these addresses from Excel into my Word 2002 document, all the inserted symbols were replaced by the question mark character "?". I don't see why this should happen, as the same Insert|Symbol is also available in Word. Anyone know how to avoid this problem?

    Here's a guess: If the inserted symbols are from a "symbol font" such as Symbol or Wingdings, then that fact might not be carrying over. Can you find the special characters in the "Normal" set? Those should come through.

    The following works for me in Word/Excel 2002 SP-2

    1. Select Tools | Options... (in Word)
    2. Activate the General tab.
    3. Tick the "Confirm Conversion at Open" check box.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Start the Mail Merge Wizard.
    6. When you select the Excel workbook as data source in Step 3 of the wizard, you will be asked which method you want to use:
    - OLE DB
    - Conversion
    - DDE
    - ODBC
    7. Select the OLE DB option.
