    Taskbar on side (Unknown)

I received the following from a freind.

Have a Brother-in-law who is using Windoiws XP Home and after installing a new printer and scanner (Lexmark), has his taks bar located on the right side of the screen and it will not move. I went through all the lock-unlock things, changed proberties, etc and it will not break lose. It will resize when unlocked, but cannot be moved. Any ideas??

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

It can't be dragged to the bottom of the screen when it's unlocked? My experience has been that you have to drag the taskbar past the point that you think you need to in order to dock it somewhere else, to the point where you cannot even see the mouse pointer.

    Dave--

You might get the friend's brother-in-law to check here because I know you've tried every usual dragging and lock-unlock mechanism you've used to help so many other people with:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerAdvanced]

Values to check out: ClassicViewState DWORD default = 0.

Also you may be able to make something of TaskbarSizeMove, TaskbarGlomming, and if you figure out what the Redmond developer means by Don'tShowPrettyPath I'd like to hear.

I also think there may be something useful here Dave:

    Lock the Taskbar:

This restriction is used to force the locking of the taskbar and restrict users from making any changes to its position. Looking at the registry instead of the places to lock it in the gui may find some value that has been somehow altered by something other than the user

    Registry Settings
    User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPolicies
    Explorer]
    System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionPolicies
    Explorer]
    Value Name: LockTaskbar
    Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
    Value Data: (0 = Unlocked, 1 = Locked)

DontPrettyPath refers to the changing of case in filenames. The default in older versions of Windows was to change the first letter to uppercase and lower all the rest, instead of leaving file names as you typed them. This setting toggles that behavior.

Most of the registry keys you've noted can be changed by TweakUI. You can observe them by using Regmon as you apply the changes. It's an excellent way to learn about the registry.

    Re: Taskbar on side (Unknown)

Thanks for reminding me of ways to monitor which probably have looks at the registry as teaching tools I haven't thought about. One of my frustrations is that I'll think I'm in the ball park to be able to get some change made, but won't understand the value's name. Pretty Path is a frequent one and I appreciate this. When you talk to people with a good understanding of the registry at MS who do a lot of tweaking themselves, and say you wish there were a listing of every key in a clear easily understood way they always say it would be logisticlaly impossible to round up the developers in so many areas to get that done. But couldn't it have been done in the first place?

In comparing Tweak UI and Winguides Tweak Manager it seems that there are more changes you can effect with Tweak Manager--he adds them frequently and of course Kelly's Tweak Section is a source.

Sysinternals is an excellent site with great people--I just wish I knew how to use more of their tools.

Where were you able to find out Pretty Path's context--any registry sources or sites--I have the 3 books in stores? I know Jerry Honeycutt one of the authors has a site.

I don't remember where I stumbled across that little nugget; I just remember them. But a quick search on the term DontPrettyPath in Google brought up one of your favorite sites, Kelly's Corner. It's out there, as are most of the obscure facts. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Thanks for these pieces of info--fill in a lot of gaps. I downloaded some sysinternals apps and I know Mark Russonovitch and others with that site keynote major meetings. I'll start using regmon and see what it can teach me.
