Can't view forwarded message attachments (Outlook 2002 SP2)

I have recently developed a problem viewing(opening) messages that were forwarded as attachments. The message will show the little paper clip in the message list pane indicating that the message has an attachment. When I open up the message, by double clicking, The "Attachments:" line is visible but no attachments are listed. At the right of the attachment line are two small up/down scroll arrows as if there were several attachments present, but nothing happens when I click on the scroll arrows. If I click on the blank "Attachments:" line, I get an "object could not be found error". This appears to only occur with attachments that are forwarded messages. Regular attachments like .jpg's go thorough fine. I have tried TweakOL to make sure that all extensions are allowed. I have relaxed my security settings and they do not appear to be the problem. I am using Outlook 2002 on a Windows XP machine. I use Active Sync with an Ipag PDA. I have used the RSS reader NewsGator which is an Outlook addin. Uninstalling it doesn't help. I have used Ornic's CSaveAtt to save some Outlook attachments. Uninstalling it does not help. I have tried to read the same messages with Outlook Express and initially experienced the same problem. However, I was able to solve the problem in Outlook Express by going to Tools/Options/Security and clearing the check at "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus".

Have you tried forwarding the message to see if the attachments appear in the new message composition box?

WyllyWylly, Thanks for your reply. I had not tried to forward one, but on doing so, I get a similar blank attachment line with the two little blue scroll buttons on the right(as in the attachment to the first post)???

Interesting. I really do not have any idea why this would happen, but I'm thinking that it may be a display anomaly of some kind. Try this: click in the attachment line, press CTRL+A (to select all), and then right click in an empty folder in Windows Explorer and see if you can paste them there.

Does this happen with all messages? Have you noticed any sort of pattern? And have you tried running the Office repair tool, or reinstalling it to repair settings?

Can you open other attachments without any problem?

Thanks again for you interest. I tried to select all and copy. When I tried to paste, the "Paste" was greyed out.

This only appears to happen with attachments that are forwarded emails. The attachment is called "message.txt" if I open the email in Outlook Express. They have all come from friends who are sending from hotmail or AOL. I gather that their default is to forward as an attachment rather than forward in the body of the email.

OK, I understand now. At least, a little. I have a friend who uses Outlook XP, same version as mine, and his emails come to me with his replies in an attached text message. Hotmail should be sending them in HTML format, with AOL, who knows. It would seem that somewhere along the line, an email server is stripping attachments out of such messages. Perhaps your ISP has some ideas, or is responsible for this action?

Other types of attachments open normally.

Re: Can't view forwarded message attachments (Outlook 2002 SP2)

Is there a yellow bar message at the top which says "Outlook removed access to something.eml"? The .EML message type, which is native to Outlook Express, might be considered dangerous by Outlook, whose native extension is .MSG (not to be confused with the food additive of the same name). But if you have cleared out the list of dangerous extensions, then this would not be it...

If you save the message to the desktop as a .MSG file and then open it in WordPad, can you see the contents of the attachment there?

How about an overactive spam filter?

Thanks for the input. No, there isn't a message suggesting removal of an eml file.
