Placebar for XP

Will the Woody's Office 2000 placebar app work with XP, or will I have to wait?

Re: Placebar for XP

Short answer: no, because the functionality it provides is built in to the XP version of Office. Seems they liked Mike's tool so much they used it without credit.

Thanks Mark. I had a quick search through XP help under placebar and file locations but could not see where you could amend the placebar.
Can you please give me a pointer to where this is done.

Well don't feel too badly about it, because the same thing tripped me up too. It's buried in an obvious place: in the File - Open dialog box, there is a text menu at the top far right that reads Tools. You can add places to the places bar from there. To change them to show as small icons, right-click on the places bar itself.

They might have stolen Mike's idea, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

Great, thanks for the headsup. I had looked at the tools, but as the "add to placebar" was greyed out I missed it. After a bit of experimenting I found that the feature becomes available when a folder is selected.

No problem, Paul! I hadn't noticed the greyed out "add" option. You've enlightened me in return!

If I am understanding what is desired here, you can customize the "Places Bar" with TweakUI_XP (from Microsoft). I've included a screenshot where that can be found in that uitilty.

Yes - in a sense. It's a different places bar. The Office applications do not use the same menu system that is found everywhere else in Windows; instead they use their own that is not affected by the settings in TweakUI. The Places bar that you are referring to is found everywhere but Office.

For general information:

There is an MSKB article on customizing the Places Bar in Office XP: HOW TO: Customize the My Places Bar in the "Open" and "Save As" Dialog Boxes.
